Does anybody know of a decent freeware or low cost backup software? Norton no longer lets me pick the net drive as a back up destination.

I use Acronis which is not free but depending on how you want to back up.
EaseUS Todo Backup is free as is Macrium and I'm pretty sure Paragon offers a free version for personal use only.
All of the free programs have some limitation and that's why I use Acronis. But, I also don't upgrade every year though they'll bug you to do so.

I don't use any backup software.
I have a 60 gig thumb drive that I back up to when I'm ready to re install
my operating system.
I also store alot of my important stuff on a spare computer or two, or more!

I have over 14 TB of hard drives in computers and in backup boxes but 60 GB wouldn't even hold all my music let alone video I have.
But, I usually keep 2 backups in case one gets corrupted.

I use Carbonite. Not free. Not necessarily even cheap, depending on your definition of the word. But it works well, and effortlessly. And yes, I've used it successfully to restore files after a Windows re-install. I'm paying for the ease and security, but those are two things worth paying for, IMO.

To use Norton 360 to backup to a network drive, simply map the drive to a letter first. It will then appear in the list of available drives.

If you boot the computer without the drive on the network, you will get an error message you can ignore. I unplug my backup drive from the network and power when it is not in use.

I've been using Seagate BlackArmor backup drive and software and it's saved my bacon many times over the years. The drive is solid state, connects through a USB port and has a 1.5 TB capacity, I sleep better nights knowing it's on the job.

For the longest time I used SecondCopy. I then realized a local copy is not the bestest should the house burn down and switched to Carbonite. My buddy (an IT Engineer) who was also using Carbonite noticed that a lot of files that were supposed to be backed up werent being backed up, so we both switched to CrashPlan. Not only can you backup to the cloud, but it can also back up to network or local drives. If you have a friend who has it, you can also back up to their computer as well.
