DuganA

Post by Beer-lord »

Tomorrow I'm doing Avery Brewing's DuganA. Never had it, can't get it here but I've loved every beer I've tried from Avery and I have lots of hops to get rid of and with over 1 lb in this 6 gallon recipe, I can use up a lot and have a few hoppy ones in the near future to help with that as well.
This time, I think I'll forego all the water treatments since I can't see where it's helped my brewing. I may add some gypsum but I'll think about that first.
I've seen mashing from 148 to 152 for this recipe so I'm going to do this at 150 to split the difference.

Here's the recipe for tomorrows brewday:

Looks good, really good. I would have never guessed there was Crystal 120 in that. How did you come to using Magnum for the bittering? Their website shows only Chinook, Centennial, and Columbus. Not criticizing your choice, just asking.

By the way, I was at the store yesterday and they didn't have it. But I asked the manager if he could get it. He's going to try. He carries other stuff by Avery, so it shouldn't be a problem. Their website says it's released in September, so keep your fingers crossed. I haven't forgotten about you. When it arrives, I'll grab a bottle for you.

Where is it on their website? I didn't see it posted unless you mean the info about the beer itself.
According to a 2012 post on HBT, someone emailed the head brewer, Matt Thrall and he gave the entire recipe to him. Other places online show C75 and some only show c40 but I'm going only by what the HBT post says but it looks like a good one.
I have some old Magnum and I'm a tiny bit concerned how much it might have lost, even in a vacuum sealed and frozen bag so of course, I'm going to add a little more. I really think the small amount of aromatic malt is going to make this beer a good one. I've not used it in over 2 years and looking back at those beers that had it, I really enjoyed the semi-malty flavor it gives it. Sometimes a bit heavy but it is a DIPA after all.

Please don't go out of your way looking for it, somehow I have plenty of beer to drink already but thanks for this. :)

The store I go to isn't out of the way at all...it's on my way to/from work. And the manager is really good about trying to get stuff if he doesn't have it.

Hmmm, the IBU's are close but the ABV is off but it does seem that all their beers are high ABV and the Maharaja I did wasn't nearly as high.
I am hoping to suck on pine cones with this beer.

So there I was, in a store TODAY looking at DuganA and Enjoy By 10 what ever (picked the Stone). Had I have known .................................and I'm not going back out. :p Plus I've already taped the North and Short West bound boxes shut (PM coming soon).

Looks like a good beer Paul. Can't go wrong with those hop combinations.

She's done. Don't know why but Beersmith had the 15 and 10 minute additions as Steep/Whirlpool and by the time I realized, it was too late so instead of having about 97 IBU's, I may be as high as 120. Oh, what is a hop head to do? I must deal with this and the weight on my back is heavy but I shall endure.
OG was supposed to be 1.074 and it's 1.076 with the hydrometer and 1.072 with the refactometer so I'll use 1.073.

In a few days I'll be dry hopping this with a ton of hops.....a sick amount but I tasted and tested it today not yet 2 weeks in and this, by far, the best tasting beer I've ever brewed (at this point). I can't believe how crisp, clean and great it tastes. If I didn't dry hop it at all, I would drink it right now, as is.
I hope I didn't just voodoo kill this but I am blown away. Can't remember what the real thing is like and really don't care as this one is a sure surprise. I don't talk well about my beers and it's early and jinx time but if this continues as is, I'll kiss my hairy legs!

Tonite I dry hopped this monster with almost 9 oz of hops. It was good when I tasted it Friday, can't wait to see what it's like when I keg it Saturday.
