Stuck Sparge

First ever stuck sparge. Next item on my grocery list is those yellow rubber gloves for brew day!! OUCH!! Ended up having to use a paint strainer back and dumping the rest of my mash through the strainer and than adding that to my boil kettle.

Figured if ever I was going to have a stuck sparge it was going to be with this pumpkin recipe. Apparently 80oz of pumpkin puree is a tad too much. Note to self, next time you make this recipe use a paint strainer back for the pumpkin!

As a BIABer, I've found my ORANGE gloves to be part of my brewing safety. They are used each and every brew day removing the bag as well as some squeezing. Amazon sells them pretty cheap too!

I had a pair as well while I was doing BIAB. They got tossed with the several moves.

Hoping my efficiency isn't messed up too much. I will think of this batch as a giant pseudo BIAB now!

I fix a stuck sparge by putting a heat resistant tube on my valve and blowing into it. Sometimes I have to repeat the process a few times but it is a lot easier than dumping contents

That's a great idea Roger. I'll remember that if/when I get a stuck sparge.

If you make this recipe again (or one with a similar potential problem), I'd recommend you get some rice hulls to put in with the grains and stuff. You might just need a better filtration system.

Pumpkin recipes, Ive found are bad for that!
The last two pumpkin recipes I've done ended up with a stuck sparge.

The pumpkin fibers tend to clog the manifold, so my plan was to use my BIAB bag
to put the pumpkin in during the mash.

Gman,

When you had this issue was your efficiency messed up or where you still somewhat close? Trying to narrow down if it was due to the stuck mash or the grains now crushed good enough.

Dave,

Between the Youtube tags, remove everything except what is after the equals sign, and then save your post, and the video will show properly. Unfortunately, Youtube makes you take the whole URL, so you just delete the preceding info.
