Lets give a plug on here for our favorite LHBS. After reading Dave's thread I thought of this. A lot of us buy online and I do maybe 75%, but these folks that try to keep a 'real' store going amongst internet competition deserve to get their business name out there...........

Mine is called Gentile's Wine Sellers, in Columbus, OH. http://www.gentiles.com/#!home-brewing/cg8i They have a fantastic selection of beer and wine. Plus all the homebrew stuff you need. I like this place becasue it's kind of self serve. You measure and grind your own grain. Their selection of hops and grain is second to none. In fact, just yesterday I was pulling trays of hops out of their walk in cooler and talking with one of the guys that works there. He helped me pick some off the wall stuff to make a session IPA. Very friendly and helpful.

The Brew Mentor, in Mentor, Ohio, like BlackDuck's LHBS these guys are very helpful but for the most part is self serve. Digital scale set up and bins of grain, grinder right in the middle of the grains, fridge with yeasts from beer to wine, cider and distilling too I think, hops in the freezer section. They brew there along with having classes on beer, wine and cider. They have a small bar set up with 4 or 5 beers in rotation they sell by pint or growler. So some Fridays after work I stop for supplies and have a pint or few and shoot the breeze with the owner. They were also featured on one of the episodes of Treehouse Masters.

Cask and Kettle in Boonton, NJ. It's a good 45-minute drive, but their selection, their service, their commitment to helping me become a better homebrewer, and the fact that they're just really nice folks make it well worth the trip. It's all highway driving, so I can zip along at 65 mph almost the whole time.

Adventures in Homebrewing, 14 miles away. I buy 2, sometimes 3 batches at once to save gas, they have a heat sealer for the grain I mill and I then double bag it at home, and refrigerate the bulk LME.

This place is pretty much my LHBS, been shopping here for a couple years now. Has a good selection of grain, yeast and hops...they are a true up and running LHBS. Like someone else mentioned, it's also kind of serve yourself. That is what I like most about them. They had a nice corner store with lots of room to move around and even had a seperate grain room in back. It was laid out like a candy store. Recently they moved and It seems they just switched ownership, and some of the things I noticed is the selection going down. They also don't have everything I'm looking for like authentic brand malts. Sure they have Munich, Pilsner and Marris Otter, but not some of the more well known truly authentic brands. It's also a real PITA now to park close to the store, they moved about a block away and the store is much smaller. Great people though and I have made plenty of great beers with their supplies and as long as they are there I will support them in one form or another.

This one is a new place that opened up about a year ago. I haven't been there yet, but I plan on checking them out. Looks like a great shop and tons of selection. About 30 min away, not even. About the same as the LHBS above, just opposite direction for me. I'm hoping they have some of the things I can't get at my current LHBS. I see they carry some different yeasts and malts that my current LHBS doesn't. They also have a huge hop cooler featuring all Hop Union hops. This place might help fill the gap in some of the things I'm not getting out of my current LHBS. I'm really excited to check them out.

This place below I used to stop into from time to time because I worked nearby. I might pick up this or that or something I could use, talk with the owner for a while and that would be it. Never really did any big shopping from there. Small little place with just enough selection to get into the hobby. Great guy and he does a lot with gardening. I just have no reason to visit anymore since I no longer work in that area and never really did any big shopping there anyway.

My neighborhood LHBS is Larrys Brew Supply; best prices in the area and the meeting place for my local home brewing club. They do wholesale to local breweries in addition to their retail business. Inventory seems to move through pretty quickly there. Plenty of fresh supplies; they leave the expensive equipment to others to retail. No White labs products, or Five Star Chemical products either. Great deals on used ball lock corny kegs there as well.

A bit farther away, 12 miles, is Sound Homebrew Supply. They carry a wide array of ingredients & equipment. Only +/- 2 years old now, they try hard, I don't think they cycle through the inventory nearly as fast though.

Mountain Homebrew & Wine Supply, 22 miles away, is my source for certified organic malts. They also carry a wide variety of ingredients & equipment. I used to go there more when one my daughters used to live near that store.

All Seasons Gardening and Brewing Supply is my normal brewing shop. They have a pretty solid selection, decent prices, and they are on my way home. Rebel Brewer is my second choice in town, but it is too far away for me to use it on a regular basis (even if there prices are a touch better), and I like the folks at All Seasons.

I mostly use The Hop Shop in Port Jeff. About 25 minutes away, but small. I go there to buy 50# grain sacks, equipment, ordinary ingredients. Anything else (Caramunich recently) I get online. I have visited other stores on the Island: Karps, Arbor Wine, and recently Back Alley in Patchogue.

There's really only 1 in our area, Brewstock (www.brewstock.com) but in the burbs there's a semi-LHBS that does have a few things at a higher price and I'm hoping it grows enough to be more competitive one day.

These folks are absolutely awesome to work with, I bought my eBIAB RIMS system from them and had it shipped to New Jersey.
