First gusher!

I just sat down to enjoy one of my "winter steam" beers. All of the previous ones from this batch have been delicious. To my horror, when I popped this one... gusher! It smelled fine, but was super cloudy. I actually marked this one as the trub bottle. I usually don't mark trubs, but i remember this one in particular, due to a Irish moss issue that I discussed in an earlier thread. Do you think it was a trub related issue, or a sanitation problem with this one bottle? Anyway, I'm bummed, and am reduced to drinking a wife's miller high life, as I have no more of mine chilled at the moment.

Moderators, throw him out!

I would speculate that there was a lot of trub and it was under a lot of pressure, but that's just a guess.

I feel so sorry for him, I just can't throw him out. He's already been punished by having to drink fizzy yellow stuff.

My guess would be overabundance of trub. I mark my last bottle with a red cap (all the others are gold), so I know which one is a potential trub bottle, and I sometimes find quite a bit of cloudiness and sediment.

I was plagued by gushers a while back, and discovered that a number of my bottles hadn't been thoroughly cleaned out on re-use. I'm more careful to use a bottle brush and double check to make sure there's no dried sediment before I sanitize and bottle, and I've pretty much eliminated the problem.

Ok, but his wife drinks Miller High Life, so shouldn't he be denied membership for marrying her? Poor judgment and all?

In fairness, Miller High Life is not all that bad (all things being equal). It's the best of a poor style, I guess is what I'm saying. The BJCP Guidelines list it as an example of a Standard American Lager. It's the "light" versions of these beers that are abominations. But I'd drink a MHL without much complaint, if that was all that was available.

It is the champagne of beers after all...

Yep. I'll drink MHL, and PBR, and the original Schlitz. There is just something nostalgic about that type of beer on a hot day at a baseball stadium. Oh, and don't forget Bud heavy and Old Style. However, they do have to be the first thing I drink, and have to be ice cold. If I've already had something with flavor...fugedabowdit.

Oh no! I wonder if it was due to the yeast. Running down to the last of my batch of steam beer last year, the last few bottles were spewing bubbles. Not quite old faithful eruption, just a slow lava flow type gush.

I'm going to take an opposing view here and say it's not the trub. I've had very trubby bottles that pour just fine (maybe cloudy, but not gushers) and I've gushers that we're trub bottles either. Sometimes, I think the Beer Gods just have to claim their share - sort of like bottle bombs.

I would make a marking on the bottle itself to see if it happens next time with that same bottle.

Sorry to hear it - I know the feeling when it happens.

Yeah, the last time I had a MGD, I remarked to my brother that it tasted like high school. It's worth it for the nostalgia now and then.

Of course, when I go to the ballpark, I can still get excellent craft beer nowadays, even at the Can/Am stadium here in the county.

Okay, you'll have to be thrown out too, now.
