I was directed to this article by my Facebook friend, Eric Shepard, AKA ESheppy in the old Mr. Beer community. He wrote it, and it's a darn good article, filled with useful advice and some thought-provoking ideas. I recommend it highly.

He's a good guy, for sure. It would be nice if he found a home here on The Borg.

Re: A good article
Good article indeed and I agree with him. I've never thought of the Reinheitsgebot as a four letter word though, just as a piece of history that today can help guide new brewers. It is a good path for new brewers to stick to until methods and ingredients are better understood. I think my 3rd batch was a Mr. Beer kit with canned cherries, honey and cinnamon. It came out extremely disappointing and from then on I never veered off the path of the Reinheitsgebot only until recently. I'm glad I did as I was able to then learn about the flavors hops can give you without needing the actual ingredient(s), which probably made for beer that turned out better than using the actual fruit.
Good judgment comes from experience, which comes from poor judgment.

Re: A good article
Eric's awesome he helped me get started back in 2009 when I tried Mr Beer kits. He's also an avid brewer and blogger too.
I liked his article too and have been in contact with him from time to time over the years.
From where I sit there's a lot of experienced brewers on The Borg, if you'd be interested in writing an article and having it published on HomeBrewTalk send me a private message.
