Forgot to take OG

Got distracted while brewing yesterday and forgot to take an OG sample. My pre-boil number was right on the money, but it bothers me that I don't have an OG for this one. Yeast was pitched about 14 hours ago. Hate to crack open the fermenter just to satisfy my OCD, but I really like having my records complete. Aaaargh!

Sorry to hear that GW. I've done as much by testing it but not recording it.

Problem solved!

Seriously, though, as someone who also really likes to know the OG, and yet has forgotten to record it, I just have to say give it three weeks in the carboy, bottle/keg it, and live with it. It'll make it easier to remember next time.

That sucks and I have done it too. I think it's to late to take a reading now and wouldn't be worth it. I've also done what John said and forgot to write it down which this thread just reminded me I didn't write yesterdays numbers down.

Been there, done that! I was perturbed enough that I haven't repeated that mistake (yet).

Beer smith has a function that uses a hydrometer reading and refractometer reading of the FG to estimate the OG. I would guess it would also work mid-fermentation, and is in the Tools section for refractometer conversions. I haven't tried it yet, but have been meaning to.

Thanks guys. Good to see I'm not the only one with memory issues.

Since my preboil numbers and volume were right on, I'm just going to use the estimated number from BeerSmith and call it good. Unfortunately Rick, it isn't 1.063...

Maybe with temp correction? I have neversometimes forgotten to take OG, but always right after pitching.
