Pervin' the starter

I don't often look at my starters but I haven't brewed much lately so I did. I can't say I've ever seen one look like this but again, I don't look at them much.

This is WLP007 in about 1500ml of wort at 24hrs. It's chunky!

I'm going to pull it off the stir plate tomorrow morning and crash it until Sunday's brew day.

No sound and you can't see much but this is 24 hours later and starting to drop.

Due to space considerations, I leave my starters right there on the ManCave floor. I can see it all the time.

I had one starter that was so vigorous, SWMBO called me at work to tell me it was overflowing, and what should she do? I just told her to put it in the beer fridge. Worked out fine.

:lol: I bought a 3 liter starter last year and love it as well as a kick-ass stir plate. This stir plate will literally do a 5 gallon carboy!
I usually have been making 2.75 liter starters so I still have some room for high krausen and I usually use half for a beer and save the other half.....sometimes splitting them in two to make another starter later. For $7 of yeast, I can get 3-5 beers out of it. I could get more but I'm very happy with that. I no longer wash yeast and rarely use the yeast cake. It just works for me so I'm leaving it alone.
And, I prolly have a bigger belly than you too!

They sold out. :( I'd been looking at that flask all week.

I have a 1, two 2s and a 3 liter flask and will have a 5 soon. Just put a 2 and 3 liter starter in the fridge to cold crash. Brewing two different beers Saturday.

I ended up getting one and to make it to the $59 dollar free shipping (does that make sense???) I got 8 oz of Sorachi Ace for an upcoming Saison (but they are so much more expensive than my LHBS) and a new 30" brush to help clean lines.
You almost need a 5L flask to make starters for lagers and I hope to do some of those now with my keezer. I'll let you know if it's good quality.

Also, I check the homebrewfinds tweets daily and they have tons of good stuff that I have to just say no to. But, you can google them and check them daily online. MoreBeer will have that flask again at the normal price which isn't that bad at all.

Paul, when you say you split a starter to make one later, are you letting the krausen fall, putting half in the fridge and using the other for your brewday, right? Now for the other half that is saved, do you pour off the liquid, then add what's left of the saved cake into another 1-2 liters of wort?

Steve, I basically do this.
Mostly I made a 3 liter starter, let it run 30ish hours, pour have into 3 500ml jars and keep the rest (about 1.5 liters) for the brew day and let it cold crash. On brewday, which is usually 3-5 days later, I decant and pitch at beer temps.
When I go to brew again, I have some choices depending on how long the 3 jars have been in the fridge. If recent, I can use 2 of them in most of my beers. If older, I simply make another starter with one.
Some have said that if you make a 1.038 starter then save it and make another one, you're stressing the yeast. I can only tell you this works for me and many others. As the article says, they've done as many as 12 generations. For me, if I can 3-4 beers out of 1 vial of yeast, I'm very happy and don't push it.

5L starter? Dude, just a couple more liters and you can have a full LBK-size batch going!

I just realized that your first post mentions 007. I love that yeast and just bought some last weekend. I like to switch around between 001 and 007 for my IPA's which do give them a different flavor and it's a completely different beer.
But boy, does it get chunky looking Try it in an APA to. I've found I need to use a bit more hops in dry hopping but 007 makes a good stout too!

Wow, the 5L flask came in today. Dayum it's HUGE! I'll need a bigger fridge to cold crash the yeast but they'll definitely be more pervin' going down here in the near future.
