Minnesota Hops

There are a few pioneering Minnesotans who are getting into the hops growing business. Minnesota, as of yet, does not list hops as an agricultural crop so the people growing them are on their own as far as crop insurance, subsidies and farm loans are concerned. (As of right now Minnesota has less than thirty acres total state wide dedicated to the growing of hops.) But one of the pioneers is just a couple miles from my house. Last night they were featured on the local news and they were harvesting their hops - Citra - and then selling them to the Mankato Brewery just fifteen miles away. Mankato Brewery is using the hops to make a "Fresh Sqeezed" IPA.
Guess who's going to be at the tap-room, glass in hand, waiting for that first keg to be tapped?

I would join you, glass in hand too, if I lived closer.

Sounds like a treat to me. Will they sell to homebrewers too?

Ya know? For some stupid-ass reason I never thought to stop in to see if they would do that. I'm gonna have to keep that in mind next season. Maybe even try to make a stop soon to see if they have any left this season.

If you're going there to ask them a favor......their fresh hops, you best bring some homebrew to share.

Try just showing up with an offer to help bring in the harvest.
Bet you get some cones to take home for your efforts.
