I drove 2 hrs this morning to get the wort and got to Bell's at about 10:20am and there was about 150 or so people in line. Door opened at 11 am and it took about 10 minutes to get in to register which consisted of them taking your name phone # and assigning a pick up time (mine being 1:45) and giving us a raffle ticket. While we waited, there were several vendors such as White labs, Blichman, Hophead Farms and others. Also the bar was serving so I tried last years competition winner, a California Common called Coffee Mustache, light in color with a smooth, roasty coffee flavor. I was surprised at how good it actually was.
After sipping a few beers and talking to other brewers and vendors Dave Bell came out to let us know the details of the competition and read off the raffle ticket winners. They had some really nice stuff but I didn't win anything. Then it was time to get the wort. When they called out name we went into the back (brewery) and opened our buckets where they were filled. The wort is 100% pale malt right from the Bell's farms and has an OG of 1.056.
I will be brewing tomorrow once I decide what to do with it.

WOW Leigh that sounds so much like our free wort project (Adelbert's) it brings back great memories of our mega stout wort adventures.
Ours wasn't for a competition but we had a blast creating 4 different brews from the same base wort.
The pic of the guy on a chair filling buckets is like a dupe of what we did.
Hope you have as much fun as we did and especially hope you'll have time to post a lot through your project since it is such a rare opportunity.
YOU GO GUY!

OK, I don't understand. You get lautered wort. How much is it? How long do you have before it starts to go bad?

The wort is free and should stay good for a couple of days especially with refrigeration. The idea of the competition is to brew a unique beer using this as a base. Once you brew it all you have to do is return 4 bottles for judging, the rest is yours to keep.

Did you stay for the hot dog eating contest? Were the "Cape Chewsaters" there in full super hero costume again this year? I was there last year but didn't get any wort. Maybe next year!

No, I didn't stick around for that. With a 2 hour drive home I didn't have time to do much more beyond getting the wort.

How much wort do you get to play with?
