O2 Set-ups

Post by haerbob3 »

OK O2 users I am looking into adding pure O2 to aerate my wort. What kind of set up do you use? How long of a burst are you giving it? Have any of you used O2 and sugar feedings?

I use an O2 bottle with stone setup. Too spendy, bottle ran out too soon, I'm back to the whip til I can get to the store someday. No sugar feedings. I do a 30 second burst, come back in 4 hours and do another 30 second burst when I have oxy on hand.

I like the aquarium pump some of the guys are using.

Are you talking about O2 to oxygenate beer? Or the tanks on rollers that some of the old timers on the forum pull around with them...?

I use about a 1 minute burst of oxygen through a 2 micron stainless steel diffuser, you can see the details of my Oxynator Oxygen Gauge And 2 Micron Diffuser setup. I counted about 10 or 12 batches of beer that I can oxygenate this way on a single red oxygen tank bought from Lowes or Home Depot.

If you can see your way clear I recommend buying the gear needed and oxygenating your wort prior to pitching, the results are well worth the investment.

I have this Oxygenation System; I believe it has a 0.5 micron stainless stone. I've owned it for over a year, and the results are well worth it. When I oxygenate, I open the regulator slowly until I just see the bubbles breaking the surface - there's no need to blast the wort with O2 - you want it dissolved, not bubbling out. I go for about a minute. With this approach, the initial little bottle of oxygen lasted almost a year (20+ batches).

I usethis one from MoreBeer because it has a filter in it and it gives me some additional peace of mind.

If I were starting fresh, I'd buy the one with the stainless steel tube instead of the normal tubing, just for the sake of sturdiness and storage (although I have had no issues).

I use ~30 seconds for 2.5G batch and ~1 minute for a 5G batch. I don't know the number of batches I've used it with so far but it has to be in the 10 or more range.
