You're a better brewer than you give yourself credit for......and I have a LOT to learn from you.....so be prepared for some long boring sessions next Feb........and answering lots of questions.

Forgot to mention that the wife and I tried Dawg's Wheat beer as well last night. EXCELLENT body, perfectly carbed and very refreshing.

My wife especially likes wheat beers (She makes a contorted face when she tries the very hoppy stuff I make tho )

Steve, you are a fine brewer, my friend.

Soon I'll try the Steam you were kind enough to send me.

After 3 days in the fridge I decided that it had plenty of time to "chill out" and was ready to be tasted.

I poured into my favorite glass (from my original meeting with Swen) and walked outside to take a good look at it.

Image

It's dark and sexy, and very clear (no haze). When held up to the light you get a wonderful glow and it takes on an amber hue to it - but just a bit.
It smells to me of general malt sweetness with touches of chocolate and coffee. The taste is smooth and finishes a bit dry (to me) with those same hints of chocolate and coffee. I was a bit nervous that it was going to be really roasty, but it's not.

I think there is a bit more bite than other browns that I've had. I'm not sure if that is due to the hops or the dark malts but that's not a complaint either.
I find this to be very tasty and I can see why it's well liked. I think it's approaching the line of my roasted/coffee tolerance but I do like it. I could see having this on a cold night and being a good gateway beer to ease into porters/stouts or Black IPAs that have more toastiness to them.

Thanks for sharing and I'll toast to what others have said: well done!

There is, and it's a combination of both the higher then normal IBUs and all the chocolate malt. I think I mentioned in my review, any more and that folks who don't like roasty beers might not like it, and also any less crystal or taking out that honey malt would also likely do that damage to who don't like porters. It's really a fine line with this beer. You seem to have confirmed that it was "just enough" in your review as your "one of those people" LOL. That's what makes this beer so cool. EDIT: It's also why people who don't like sweeter browns (as in most of them) like this beer.

Screw Ron, I'm looking forward to that, after what I drank last nite at the HBC meeting, Willoughby Brewing Co. did a sour porter, Pucker Up Porter, this was so freaking good I bought a Crowler of it for Asheville. I asked Rick if he was going to brew it again said he wasn't sure as this was a limited release Collaboration beer, so I couldn't chance it not being on tap down the road.

Are we going to have to hold Ron down to watch "the medicine go down" with a spoonful of sugar ?
