Pilsner conditioning?

Yes BrewDemon and Mr. Beer kits are pretty darn easy but sometime you need a little help from the Borg to get you on the right track. Post your questions here!

Pilsner conditioning?

Post by BeerRust »

I have an 18cent Orange Pils conditioning 3 weeks in the bottle. I put 1 in the frig last night. I usually go 3-4weeks in the bottle, and 24 hours up to a week in the frig. (also have been keeping one bottle of each brew to try again after 1 year ). But I have been reading different options on conditioning Pils. Some say longer conditioning , some say shorter???? But none hit the 3-4 week mark.

I am thinking of trying it tonight it will have been in the frig for 24 hour!!! But I have plenty of other beer so I can wait too.

Is this a genuine Pilsner? If so, you may want to lager it for a couple of months or more.

What type of yeast did you use and what strain?

My current lager an Oktoberfest has been lagering since June, will be going into the corny next week. I am so behind schedule. I agree with Dave a true lager's conditioning time is measured in months not weeks. Lager yeast are much slower when compared to an ale yeast.

As The Hat indicated, if you made the brew with a lager yeast and did the proper brewing for a lager, you may need to condition it for a longer time period. If you used an ale yeast making a Pils-like ale, then it should be drinkable after 4 weeks in the bottle. However, if you have a pipeline, let it sit longer. I haven't found anything I've made (including IPAs - some say to drink these young - that haven't improved over longer periods of time). I have a pipeline built up and rarely crack a bottle before its been in the bottle for 3 months. I've noticed no ill affects to that - and all my brews are ales.

I guess its not a true Pilsner. I have use the MB Pils with the included yeast. Which is usually a Ale yeast, and I did not cold lager it.

You should be good to go around four weeks after bottling, then. How long you let it condition, and how long you refrigerate before drinking are up to you, but we generally follow 3-2-2 for most ales, and definitely with MB recipes.

I went ahead and tried it last night, and it was good. A little bitter, the orange was lightly noticeable after a few sips.

Cool! I would bet that if you give it another two weeks you will notice a difference. Beer has a way of changing with time some beers get better and better with time other get better only up to a point before the flavors and profile will change completely, still others taste best young. So time is a good thing to experiment with.
