My early RedX recipe

Screwy and BigPapaG.....thoughts???
I won't be brewing this for a while and have gone back and forth so far and think I like this but I may remove the Vienna if it adds too much to take away from the RedX malt.
For now, Amarillo and Citra are my hop thoughts though I will likely add Simcoe as well (and maybe a new, never tried hop at the end).
I've read that many like a bit of Munich with this as it matches nicely. I'm aiming for a higher ale, low IPA but not a session. Between 5.5% and 6% max. I plan to mash low at about 150.
I'm sure this will change again as I can never feel settled on a recipe, ala OCD!

Looks great to me!

I like the mash temp and hop choices as well!

And can't wait to hear about the 'mystery hop!'

No big secret but maybe some Equinox or some Wai-Iti that I have a small amount of near the end of the boil or dry hop. I'm not sure if mixing both is a good idea so it will likely be Equinox which I know nothing about so why not.

Mmmm...

IMHO, Wai-iti would be great! But I'm not a fan of Equinox yet...

Research is so important, don't you think?

Oh, I did the research and this one is a winner. This little tap room knows that this one is a winner and they will soon start bottling this one in bombers. Good choice!

Updated recipe. I cut the Vienna in half and added some hops I want to play with and think I may mash at 152 but will, of course, make changes since it might be a month before I get to brew this.

I'm scared of all that Equinox. Unless the beer I made with 2oz of it changes a lot since I bottled it. I'll likely pop the test bottle of that in about a week, so can give you revised impression then. But at bottling the green peppery stuff was intense.

But I suppose it is possible that I am a super taster of whatever it is that gives it that flavor, who knows.

Funny you should mention this because I've been reading about it all day. Seems it either goes green pepper or tropical. Many say only use it as a dry hop.
I'm not brewing this for a while so I would greatly appreciate your thoughts when you open your bottle.
I may just end up moving the hops around so the equinox is only at flameout and dry hop and move the others up instead.
I did get more RedX so after I mess this one up, I will try different hops but I do want to see what it will do even if it does clash a bit with the malt.

At what stage did you add the Equinox?
Why is it so popular?

I did it in 2.5 gallon batch as:

1oz Equinox hops (13.4% AA) @10
1oz Equinox hops @Flameout

And then I let all those hops steep in the pot with the lid on for a 30 minute hop stand.

I didn't use any other hops, I just wanted to see what Equinox was about.

I didn't use any for traditional bittering addition because they were high enough AA hops that with the extra hop stand utilization gave me far more IBUs then a pale ale needed without any traditional bittering.

There was tropical in there. But it got hammered by the green peppery vibe. If you have had a green chili beer with a chili in the bottle - and can imagine adding more green chilies, but taking away the heat - well that's what it was like.

I'll know more in a week or so when I pop a conditioned bottle vs. a bottling sample.

It looks like I won't be using any Red X anytime soon. I was thinking about buying some to do a 5G test batch, but shipping is $11.99. Even if I threw in enough hops for the recipe, I'd be spending $15 on ingredients and $12 on shipping. I don't buy in large quantities because I don't brew often enough to warrant it nor do I have or want a grain mill.

MoreBeer doesn't carry it so I can't pick it up locally so I'll just live vicariously through you guys for a while. Please keep us posted!

I just bought from Farmhouse, 12 lbs of Red X, 4 oz each of Huel Melon, Azacca and Wai-ti hops and paid $10.99. Not great but not bad.
We can't get it locally here either but next time I'm at my LHBS, I'm going to ask them to think about stocking it.

Yeah, that's where I was looking (Farmhouse). If I had more to buy, or equipment to go with it I wouldn't mind the shipping but it just seems out of balance to pay that much for shipping on a small order. I'll just plan on brewing the Simcoe beer I've been wanting this coming weekend and keep something with Red X in mind. Of course, I can always just drink more of the Patalska, too :D

Hey, Beer-Lord: I am drinking my Equinox beer and actually liking it. So that's good news. I will post a more detailed review on it's thread, which will be bumped so you should see it.
