A friend mine really likes Brooklyn East IPA. Unfortunately it is not available here. Does anyone know of a clone recipe? I have this from their website:

Style: India Pale Ale
Malts: British Pale, British Crystal
Hops: East Kent Golding, Willamette, Northdown, Centennial
Alcohol by Volume: 6.9%
Original Gravity: 15.4° Plato

Thanks
BobH

Sorry, never heard of it. I checked HBT and there isn't one there either - just a few people looking for a clone recipe a few years ago.

I don't have a recipe. Brooklyn makes some fine beers, their Lager is outstanding. Six Point is even better, if you ever visit Brooklyn.

Their web site has a list of ingredients, but I've never had it.

But some reviews talk about a "tea" like flavor.

To me that means there is a lot of the EKG in it, as that's the hop I would describe that way when used in large quantities. The English crystal sounds like a lighter English crystal based on descriptions too.

Without knowing anything else, based on what's listed on their web site, and the reviews, I'd just start with an ESB grain bill/hop schedule with the listed hops, and then kick it up to IPA strength by adding more base malt and more EKG in the boil/finishing. And see what I got. Whatever it was, I'm sure I would drink it.

And that's about all I got.

My comments on that clone recipe would be that Brooklyn's web site does not list Amarillo as one of the hops.

"East Kent Golding, Willamette, Northdown, Centennial"

If I was using that recipe as a base, I would put the Northdown (if I had any) as the bittering addition and/or maybe as a late addition if you wanted to do swap around the EKG and do a LARGE EKG bittering addition instead (you will get the tea like flavors from a LARGE EKG bittering addition, and some resin from the late Northdown in that case), and the Centennial in place of the Amarillo. Northdown tastes nothing at all like Amarillo or Centennial. A citrusy vibe would to me place the Centennial there and the Northdown or EKG as to be the bittering. Regardless of where the EKG actually goes you still need a lot of it, so I would not reduce the amount. If anything, if moving to bittering, then increase it.

I'm not convinced on the dark crystal either based on reviews. The flavors people describe in reviews I read seem to me more of a light or medium English crystal thing. Or else there is only enough dark crystal for color adjustment, and the mash temps bring out the sweet malty British IPA like vibe.

Other then that, I think it's probably a pretty good starting point as it is EKG heavy and to get that "tea like" flavor people describe that's something you would want.
