As posted, I'm making an eight gallon batch to split into two fermenters with two yeasts. Both parts are Belgian Pale, all the ingredients are the same except the yeast. I think it is one big batch. But once before I made one wort and split it, feeding one side candi syrup to make a Dubbel. Since I came out with two different styles, I think that was two batches. How would you count them? Either way, I passed 50 batches today!

I count per yeast pitched. So two.

What he said! Plus, you have 2 different yeasts for for sure, 2!

Agreed. Different yeasts contribute different aspects, regardless of the similarities in the grain bill and hops bill.

They're going to be two different beers; therefore, two batches.

Count me in the 2 batch camp, too! They will be very different, therefore two beers.

I think you are free to call it however you want.

1. On this day I made batch x where I split the wort and made two different beers.

2. On this day I made beer A (batch x) and beer B (batch y) from the same wort.

I would call it 2 batches, even more so with Belgian yeast strains. A huge amount of the character comes from those. You can't discount that.

Interesting. I'm not too concerned about it, there won't be an audit or anything. But if this is two batches, and the Dubbel/Pale split was two, the APA split between Notty and 05, maybe even a couple of too strong batches that I thinned part and left part strong. I may be at 55 batches. Anyway it's a bunch of beer.

It all depends on how many beers you drink before you log the batches. Sometimes I get so loose that I count every glass of beer as a batch. Later today I plan to start on batch number 8,963.

I would call it 2.

The only true measure that I look at are gallons. But then again, the right amount of beer differs for each of us. I haven't brewed since the first week of February, with the intention of working down my inventory. Yesterday I had a nice 14 month old red. I am exactly at 18 cases right now. I plan on brewing something soon - got 6 cans of Mr. Beer Bavarian Weissbier for $5.68 a can and one of them is dated June or July, the rest next February. I figure I will get ingredients when I go to National Homebrew Day on the 7th.
