I’ll admit that some of their stuff is getting too mainstream and starting to taste alike……I miss the aroma in many of their beers.

He does give valid arguments…….but I give them a push for their early work in craft history

I didn't watch the video yet (I'm listening to the news). I do think that SN, Sam Adams, and Blue Point have been left behind, they are still solid go to beers when nothing better is available, or for non craft drinkers.

So...

I will just say that it depends on what you like. Judging a brewery because they don't make an IPA or APA with enough aroma for your liking just means they don't make an IPA or APA to your liking, and/or you simply wrecked your pallet. Beer is not just IPAs / APAs.

For example, their Kellerweis is one of the few American hefe's that I would describe as authentic, world class - as good as the best German counterparts.

It's not "pushing the envelope" much perhaps depending on how you define envelope. Although, I'd argue that Kellerweis does push the envelope as far as a truly high quality German style hefe being made in the states, which not many breweries do.

Of course if you think wheat beer is American hoppy/clean (not yeast driven) stuff vs. authentic German yeast driven wheat beer style then you might not like Kellerweis at all. But that just means you don't like that style of beer. It does not detract from how good Kellerweis actually is. And I'm serious when say it is a world class example.

I don't drink a lot of hefe's but my wife drinks them often and SN Kellerweis is her top one, from the US. I used to think that Shiner made one of the better hefe's, and they do, but I think SN's is better.

So who is this guy really? Anyone know what his background is? Is he just some guy that decided to post himself talking about craft beer on you tube? I had to turn it off, he comes across as the know it all god of craft beer and what he says is gospel. I'm not sure who this guys is, but I have a tough time listening to him. I just don't think he's all that credible.

For example....He talks about someone and agrees with that someone saying they are the go to craft beer of gas stations. That this beer is right next to the BMC beers in so many gas stations. Then he says their distribution is terrible. Not sure how you can become the go to gas station craft beer and have terrible distribution.

I actually don't watch many beer reviews but since this was posted, I watched it. And laughed. It doesn't sound much different than a conversation that I imagine many of us having if we were together having a few beers at a local brewery. I think the big difference is that he recorded it and put it out there for comment.

I do remember seeing him review Stone's Delicious IPA when it first came out and was laughing about some of the comments. I guess I take this as entertainment, so I just laugh and don't it seriously.

My favorite part is "candied orange rind". God Bless those of you that can pick that out.

I like the guy because he's passionate about beer but he's pretty much a self proclaimed reviewer.

That's kind of what I thought. Thanks for posting that. At least now I know where he is coming from. He can be a little entertaining, but I'm with Ron on the "candied orange rind"..... And that's not the first review that I've seen him use descriptors like that. Anyone with a palette like that should be paid to use it instead of posting on YouTube. Unless of course you really don't have a palette like that and your just saying you do because it sounds cool when you post it on YouTube...

This is my beef with things like RateBeer or Beer Advocate. Every description reads the same to me, with the exceptional super-taster calling out things that mashani couldn't even taste!

I do find all of these entertaining, though - and hey, people talking about beer is good, right?
I imagine that I sound like that to some people that overhear me talking with friends in a brewery, though. I try to never be the guy that is trying to show how much he (relatively speaking) knows, but I bet some of us come across that way.

And, passion for anything is good, right?

I'm good with it Ron. Besides, it's all entertainment to me. I don't buy or not buy based on what I see on tv, youtube, circulars etc. I just buy what I like and want......so I guess I'm not a very good shopper.

SN brews what I personally consider to be more classic examples of beer styles. Their stuff isn't out in left field or cranked up to 10. Just because a beer is extreme does not make it good. SN APA is solid. So is Torpedo, Fireside, Rye IPA, their Porter, Bigfoot, etc. The Brown Ale is Awesome.

Anybody who doesn't appreciate SN might possibly be too new to craft beer to appreciate them. They were craft beer before craft beer was cool.

For me, this sums it up. When I think of "new, pushing the edge, interesting, etc." I don;t think of SN. When I think of a solid go-to Pale Ale, they certainly come to mind.
Basically, if I'm out and drinking or eating and there's nothing else of interest available I know I can booty-call SN and it will come through
