Worked my first beer festival.
With the help of SWMBO, we poured quite a variety of Mr. Rufus brews at the World of Beer Homebrew Festival in the UCF area of Orlando yesterday. This was the first event I've ever poured at, and while it was hotter than blazes, my wife and I had a great time!
There were 15 or so homebrewers there representing their respective breweries that hope to one day come to fruition. The event was sold out with over 200 tickets sold, and everyone in the crowd seemed like they had a blast sampling everyone's wares.
Prior to the event, I was informed to bring 10-15 gallons (or more) of beer for tasting, and I settled on bringing less volume but more variety. The winner of the public's choice won a grand prize of 20% of ticket sales and their competition entry would be brewed by a local brewery for serving at the brewery taproom and at the World of Beer UCF.
I didn't win any prizes but it was great to hear feedback from the crowd about the beers. We were pouring Choco Brown, Tabby hefe, and Saint Sebastian Tripel as the flagships. We also poured two saisons that were a hit with the crowd- Saison d'Olivia which I brewed originally to commemorate the birth of my daughter. It's a Belgian saison with blood oranges, ginger, and honey. And the other saison is one I collaborated with a friend on that we called Everlong IPS. It's a raspberry lemonade inspired brew using 5 lbs of raspberries and hopped like an IPA using Lemon Drop hops which lent a vibrant lemon/grapefruit flavor and aroma.

You can't ask for more fun than that.
Yep, way too hot to stay outdoors for long. But at least you had thirst quenching options.

It's funny you mention that. I want to brew an Oktoberfest beer. And I'm going to call it Ottoberfest (because #OttoTheHotdog). I just have no idea where to start as far as the grain bill or the hops. All I know is lager yeast, cold fermentation, d-rest. Maybe I can use kolsch or Cali common yeast to get away with fermenting warmer and faster but still low enough on the ale temp scale to suppress any esters from forming. I'd love some help on a recipe!Inkleg wrote:That's Friggen Fracken AWESOME Phil!!!!!!!! You've come a long way my friend and we are all stoked for you.

I was very happy with my purchase of an EZ Up tent from Wally World. It has a UV protection rated liner and kept us a lot cooler than it was out in the sun, even if it was still 90° under there. Better than 100°+.Beer-lord wrote:You can't ask for more fun than that.

Been thinking of getting one of those things as the wife suggested that many times. Easy to put up, portable and easy to take down.
What size did you get or do they just have one? Costco has a few sizes.

I got mine from harbor freight when I did the music festival trying to hawk my whamolas. I like it cause the case has wheels on it.
Re: Worked my first beer festival.
It's a 10x10. Easy to expand and contract, and comes with a bag that has a strap so you can store it and lift it over your shoulder.Beer-lord wrote:Been thinking of getting one of those things as the wife suggested that many times. Easy to put up, portable and easy to take down.

I've brewed this twice and no complaints yet. YMMV Next time I might try it with WLP833 just to see what changes.philm00x wrote:It's funny you mention that. I want to brew an Oktoberfest beer. And I'm going to call it Ottoberfest (because #OttoTheHotdog).

That sounds like a lot of fun. Our local beer festival was Saturday and usually on Sunday they do a homebrewers event but they sid they were putting it off this yea until later.
If timing works put, I just my brew something and go do this myself this year, too..

Re: Worked my first beer festival.
In hindsight, bringing 5 different beers was probably overkill. But it got people talking because of the variety that was available. But 2 or 3 will do the trick. Just bring a case n a half of each beer. If you're one of those that have some spare change to afford a jockey box with 2 or 3 taps then that makes pouring a bit easier, but still a bit cumbersome to carry around.Kealia wrote:That sounds like a lot of fun. Hehe thanks, Jeff. Ibasterd (Andrew) was the one that designed my logo a couple years ago. I've kept the graphic files since then to have in case of wanting to have things made, such as the banner. My wife had uploaded the file to Vistaprint and had the banner made. It's perfect for shows like this one. People were talking about the logo all day! I was so happy.Inkleg wrote:LOVE the banner!!!!!! Tell me more!!
