Red Placenta IPA

Brewing this up today. Mash PH was a bit low at 5.13 but I added a tad bit of baking soda to bring it closer to 5.3. Ideally I wanted to let it ride to see what the hop zing would be at that ph but I chickened out.
Gonna test the Hydra chiller today too!

What took you so long to figure that out? Have you met me in person?
Sort of blends in with the copper, doesn't it?

4 1/2 hours later I'm done! Hit the numbers right on the head!
This could be the least bitter and maybe one of the tastiest yet. I almost felt bad not adding more hops to the boil.
Info on the Hyrda chiller in the equipment thread.

My Placenta is done. 1 week out and finished at 1.011 at 6% just about what the recipe calls for. I took a very small taste and it was very good.
Now I have to think if I want to still wait a week to dry hop or just 'get er done' early. I don't have kegerator space yet so I just may wait. Or, drink a lot more to finish a keg. Any takers?

First taste after only 6 days on gas but I feel it's a winner. I'm a huge fan of Red X. Last use I kind of went overboard with Equinox. This time I simplified the recipe so the malt could take center stage. Also, first time using the Farmhouse Blend hops. I'm not sure just how inconsistent these 4 oz packs are from group to group but I'm sold on it too. Soon as the new year comes and I'm allowed to buy hops again, I'm getting a ton of it and using it often.
Grapefruit comes first, then other citrus but I do get a whiff of malt that is definitely different from 2 row. Sort of sweet. I think the Citra and Mosaic work very well with the Farmhouse Blend and you'd never know there was no bittering hops. I'm not sure I'd forego bittering hops in all my IPA's but definitely in pales it works well. I've still got lots to play around with. In another week or two when this clears up, I'm going to really brag about it. :p

For those not trying this malt, if you want something different but not too different, try some but I think you will need 75% or more to make it really enjoyable.

The black Belgian IPA I made with the farmhouse blend is very yummy, I'm going to buy more of them next time I order from Farmhouse too.

I sent an email to Farmhouse to ask about the Blend they sell. It seems each group is different. I had Blend #10 and they are on Blend #11 now. You can see what is in the current blend by looking at their blog.
http://www.farmhousebrewingsupply.com/blog/

My blend was comprised of:
Hop % Of Blend

Orbit 28.57
Columbus 14.29
Kohatu 14.29
Calypso 14.29
Polaris 7.14
Fantasia 7.14
Galena 7.14

Pretty cool. Do they give you an alpha % so you can figure IBU's?

Yes they do. I did swap a few emails and asked lots of questions and today he told me he was going to answer the rest of my questions when he had more time.
Some of the hops in the order I got I had never even heard of. As a hop lover, I like that!

I think based on when I got mine they would have been Blend 9, one before yours - which doesn't seem to be listed on their blog.
