Oh My!

Welp, it finally happened! Woke up this morning to a lid blown off, still looking for bubbler. Wife did not say a word, just went to work early... good or bad, I will see tonight. Took 2 hours but I think I have the kitchen cleaned up. Red foam, VERY sticky red foam all over the place, counters, floor, walls.... was NOT a pretty sight..... LOL. I put lid back on and used a blow off tube this time, should have the first time. Talk about an active, explosive fermentation. End of tube is in a jug full of sanitizer and it is sounding like a machine gun going too, talk about crazy! When I went to bed last night it was bubbling along nicely so I did not expect this explosion overnight. I should have taken a pic but was too..... unhappy this morn... LOL Crazy wine.

Pros of brewing a watermelon concoction:

- Used excess watermelon from garden
- Simple to make
- Low cost

Cons:

- Wife left without saying a word

Looks like the cons outweigh the pros!

Can't say that I've ever had a mead or wine fermentation explode. So that's pretty good stuff there.

years and years ago, about 1998, I was 2 years into brewing with Mr. Beer products. So I decided to make some wine.(Mr. Beer also sold wine making stuff back then). So I empty a gallon of cheap wine and make a batch of jailhouse wine with fruitjuice and lottsa sugar and some baker's yeast. I put a half-assed airlocky thing on the bottle and sat in on a tray on top of a barstool.Several days later,I'm coming home from 2nd shift around midnight, and after a shower my wife rolls over and sez. Downstairs. So I get up,go downstairs to find the bottle had completely blown apart and wine was everywhere. I just went back to bed and cleaned it up the next day.A few days later i went to print something on my printer and it did not work,so I gave it to my StepDaughter to fix. Here it had 2 big pieces of glass lodged in it stopping it from operating. The printer was across the room!Another time early into the Mr. Beer experience,I wanted to make wine coolers for SWMBO,so I whip up a batch of WCPA,with lottsa sugar and as soon as the airlock stopped blooping I bottled it. I filled the 12 oz. glass bottles with 1/2 beer,1/2 Juicy Juice ,and capped them.I put them into an empty case to condition.Again, home from work,2nd shift,Wife sez,Downstairs. I go down and 18 of 22 bottles had exploded.Well you can imagine the mess I had the next day. But,I just chalked it up to learning the ropes.

Cool RandyG, it's nice to know that someone has blow up a glass fermenter in their past beside me.

I'm glad the carboy did not crack/blow. It's a bigmouth so there is *some* give to them. Those lids are on tight, I'm still surprised it blew it off like it did. Landed across the room. Still waiting on the war department to get home..... hope my cleaning passes the muster.... LOL I have had bottles blow, but in the case they didn't make quite the mess this did.... watermelon and strawberry sure made for a sticky situation.

Glad nobody got hurt and that in the grand scheme of things it isn't too bad.

I've heard that in some parts off the US, a water fountain/drinking fountain is called a bubbler. And Google treks me or can be a kind of bong.

But I'm guessing that you're using it to mean airlock. Is that correct?

I've heard fountains and bongs called that. Yup, that's what I call my airlock. It's full of Vodka, or was... LOL There's a blow-off tube there now and it looks like as fast as it started, it's over. Now for the conditioning.
