The second article addresses some possible causes: development pressure and changing style. The comments on the first are interesting, one suggesting that a smoking ban is to blame.

Interesting.
It makes me think of my own town, which has a micro brewpub that seems to be doing fairly well. Thing is, my town also has a great many drinking establishments in the same area (right near the commuter train station; we're a bedroom community for NYC commuters).
People want these types of places. That much is apparent. In my case, a lot of it is location, location, location (no lie, you can walk to these places in less than five minutes after just stepping off the train). But big real estate developers don't get it. I was especially caught by the vilification of the mega-bars with crappy food and big screen TVs. Okay, if you want some incarnation of Dave and Buster's, fine. Spend your money and your time there with your friends who refuse to grow up and need games and constant overstimulation to convince you you're having a good time. Some people actually want a cozy, friendly place where they can sit with their pals and talk and joke around a bit to unwind with a pint or two.
I hope the smaller pubs have great success.
