The year of the yeast!

I've spent most of 2017 working on making my water better and think I've got it down pretty well now (much props to Screwy Brewer for ALL his help and time).
So 2018 is going to be a year I play with different yeasts. I've already started with Bootleg Biology lager yeast and have ordered their Bru Yeast to play with and I also just bought 2 strains of Imperial Organic yeast (200 billions cells to a pack).Got a Juicy strain and their Flagship, a la, 001/1056 version. So I guess an NEIPA is on soon.

Be prepared for me to bore all with my thoughts thru 2018. Otherwise, you can always block me. :o

Reading about yeast is always interesting, to me at least and looking forward to hearing your trials. BTW How can I block you on here? Just kidding :clink:

I like yeast experiments. I've split a few batches between yeasts.

Yeah I've tried to block him, but I still see him hanging around the front yard from time to time. ;)

Sounds like fun and looking forward to hearing about your beers. If the Juicy is related to Wyeast 1318 be ready to clean up even with a blow off tube.

I've been told I clean up well!
I think you have to go the member section to 'disappear' other members. Not sure how it works but many forums have the same type of option. I don't care if everyone blocks me, I'll post anyway since I get paid $1 per post and need the money!

WOW! I get $2.50/per post! [emoji12] Looking forward to hearing about the Brulosophy yeast from Bootleg.

To continue my job as yeast nerd, 2nd never tried yeast of 2018 is Imperial Juice. It's going in a NEIPA v2 this weekend. Suppose to be a beast and guaranteed to blow up the fermenter. Based on 14 hours in the starter, I am going to be prepared. This comes in 200 billion cells and was only 20 days old when I got it (thanks MoreBeer!) Of course, more yeast nerdness to follow.

THAT looks like it is working, how long you going to let it go or in the fridg and decant?

I'll put this in jars tomorrow night and in the fridge. Just under 2 liters will be used Sunday and the rest for future brews. I want to try this in a 5% session juicy pale as well.

BL what were you using for the starter? and what gravity? not that I doubt anything you are doing and know you know what you are doing, but I just like to know things so I can know too.

I use light DME at about 1.037 or .38 though I never test it (use yeastcalculator).
I have a 2, 3 and 5 liter flask and depending on what yeast I use and how much I want to over build for later, decide how much to make. I've kept overbuilt yeast for up to 7 months and used with no bad effects.

I discovered that Omega yeast makes some funky yeasts that I'm going to use this summer.

They have two different Kviek strains - from Norwegian farmers. Both are good at 80-100 degrees. I see more juniper infused farmhouse ales this summer.

What they call Hothead is also I believe a 3rd Kviek strain, but it must be mellower as they just advertise it as a yeast that can ferment hot and compliment citrusy hops.

Kviek strains all tend to make orange or other citrusy esters.

They have some other funky strains that are Sacc but make Brett like fruit flavors. I think I'm going to go for some of those too.

IE it was discovered that WLP664 which was though of as a Brett B strain, is actually not Brett strain, but actually some kind of Saccharomyces var. diastaticus "spoilage" strain (Like Bella Saison or 3711). I might play with some of that, or the Omega yeast equivalent (they call it "Tropical Ale").

Doing some yeast learning, I came upon a yeast company I had never heard of called Inland Island from Colorado. They have quite a number of yeasts available.
I'm not trying any of these yet but it may be something I'd try in the late fall.

Well, they don't lie when they say that Juice yeast works fast and hard. Only 6 hours after pitching it was doing it's thing. This morning I can see it's already to the blow off tube. It's clear now but I bet by tonite it'll be clogged.
And it smells very nice in the fermenting keezer!

Enjoy reading these post from the Brewing Pro's on here. I'm still crawling but have learned a lot in the past 6 months. :thanks:
