Just received a Muntons kit for Red Ale. The instructions say to add the hop pellets to the boiling wort but do not mention for how long. Any hints. They are Fuggle hops if that matters.

How many ounces of pellet hops? And did it come with Hopped malt extract?

If it's strictly for bittering, then I'd probably do it for 45 minutes to an hour.

That is what I am trying to determine. If he has a hopped malt extract then they must be for flavoring. If not they are for bittering.

Tried to find the Munton's Red Ale but the website wasn't friendly IMHO and no chatter on other sites about hopping this one that I could find.
We need more info Brian. I have seen positive things about Munton's and am surprised to see that the instructions aren't clear.

Irish Red Ales almost never use any flavor or aroma hops. I would use the entire hop addition for bittering, boiled for one hour. The bitterness level should be between 17-28 IBUs. Add them after your hot break to avoid boil over.

I sure like a small flavoring addition in mine. 2 oz at 15 minutes. But then I like to dry hop mine too.

I do too. In fact one of my favorite beers is highly hopped red ale that I brewed with my son earlier this year. Being that it's a kit though, I'm assuming (hopefully without making as ass of me) that it is intended to be to style.

More info - The malt extract is not hopped and there are two 3.3 pound cans with 1 oz of hops. The extract is the Muntons "light". I was going to split the batch for the LBK. The kit also included some grains for seeping.

The hops are obviously bittering hops then. 45 minutes to an hour as suggested before.
