Grilling today, as I often do during warm weather. I use a Char-Griller Akorn with lump charcoal, lighting it with a chimney and starters. When the fire gets going in the chimney, I empty it into the grill and put the chimney aside to cool. Once before I was picking up cherry blossoms from the prep table when one of them burned my fingers. It was a live coal that had stayed in the chimney, but fallen out on the table. But the burn wasn't the real hazard. Three times in recent weeks a larger coal stayed stuck in the chimney, twice falling out on the ground. I store the cooled chimney in the shed, with the charcoal. If one of those coals stayed hot long enough, it might burn my shed down. My brewing gear is in there!

I always leave mine outside most of the day after using it. It usually cools down fast anyways before I put it away.

Whoa John. I always shake my starter to make sure there are no coals stick in it.

This is another good cautionary tale.

All kidding aside, I'm glad to hear that you found this out by a slight scorch to the fingers rather than a burned-down shed.

Another hazard don't wear sandals when your using the chimney those little fireflies that emit from it can make you dance.

My favorite is a bag of charcoal labeled "Caution Flammable"
From now on I'm only using flame retardant charcoal.
Hmmm, I do wear sandals when grilling. A new opportunity to hurt myself!

At one point I had the nickname "Fire Marshal Dave" at work because I totally freaked out at someone who left a plastic garbage can pressed up against a baseboard heater, which melted through it and lit all the paper inside on fire and almost lit the place on fire, luckily I came in to fix a server and found it and put it out first, so saved the place. They even gave me a fireman helmet. I think I still have it somewhere.

So, do I need to put it on and come visit you bruh?
