First Round 2018 NHC

Post by Banjo-guy »

I received my scores last week. I brewed an Oatmeal Stout. I scored a 40 and a 38. I’m really happy with those numbers! This is only my second competition.

I agree with the judges’ comments about my beer. The main area that brought my score down was a general comment of more flavor. I doubled the dark grains and cold steeped instead of adding them to the mash for this brew. This is what a Gordon Strong recommends. Next year Ill submit this beer again but will either increase the amount of dark grain, mash them or do a combination of both methods.

Those are fantastic scores. Especially at that competition, they judge them right there. Did you advance to the finals?

Nicley done! Congratulations on those outstanding scores. If you've advanced to the finals they're held on June 28th. You may have time to tweak your recipe and brew it again?

I didn’t advance. The catagory must of been very strong this year.

That's excellent.

I have done the cold steep many times, I've typically doubled the grains too, and have liked the results. I'm actually surprised that you didn't get as much flavor out of them, it seems doubling them from an original grain bill works out pretty well in my experience so far.

I have always cold steeped for a full 24 hours and stirred it once in a while, did you do that?

I didn’t cold steep for 24 hours. It was more like 12-16 hours. Maybe that’s the difference.

Super scores! Congratulations! The competition at that level has to be intense, so you did yourself (and The Borg) proud!
