Reserving beer online - interesting idea

A local brewery that puts out a fair number of beers (new ones weekly or bi-weekly) has started splitting batches that are canned and selling 1/2 at the brewery (first-come, first-served) and putting 1/2 online for 'reservation'. My understanding is that if you reserve them, you get 48 hours to pick them up and pay for them or they get released to sell in the brewery.
Their thinking is that this allows non-locals (anyone that can't be there on release day) a fair shot at getting some of their beer. They are a smaller brewery and they are trying to make their stuff more widely available. It's an interesting idea. I suppose they could simply sell a fixed number per day (like Russian River does for Pliny the Younger each year).
I don't care one way or the other myself. If I want some they are close enough for me to go get some - depending on the release day & time. Just curious, how would you feel if this was picked up in your area? Cool idea? Or do you not like it?
