Sabro hops

Anyone tried Sabro hops yet? I have some coming my way but have not even had a beer with these hops yet (none in my area as far I've seen). Probably do a big pale or a small IPA with these to see what they offer but don't know if I'll pair these or use them alone. I'm trying to find as much info on these as I can before I use them.

I made a single hopped HBC 438 beer, and I remember liking it just fine.

It was if I remember something like using some mix of pearl, citra, mosaic, and cedar incense.

But I got those hops as part of an neomexacanus hop sampler of some sort, and haven't bought them again.

So I guess I wasn't totally blown away enough to rush out and buy more.

I think it's the same hop as what your talking about before they gave it a name.

Yes, that's the HBS 438. If you were to pair them with another hop, what would you choose?

It was pretty complex as a single hop beer goes, I don't think you should fear using them on their own as a whirlpool/dry hop, just paired with something else for bittering if you don't want to waste expensive hops for that.

If you do want more hop character involved, I would say something like Simcoe, Nelson, Amarillo or even "boring these days" stuff like Centennial or Cascade or CTZ would all be good. All of those would have complementary flavors/aromas I think. I personally would add something danker like the Simcoe or CTZ, but I am like that and not everyone is.

I just picked up a six pack of Sonic Boom Version 2 from BrewDog that uses this. It also had Centennial, Simcoe and Chinook in it. It's a tasty beer. In fact, it was probably one of their better if not best beer that I've had so far. It sounds like they were thinking the same thing you were Mashani.

I brewed with this hop yesterday and it did have a distinctly different smell to me when added to the boil and even in the package. The hop smells almost sweet and the pack was very fresh.
Today as it's fermenting away, I can definitely smell a sweetness. But, when reading about this, many use 'mint' in their description so I wonder if that's what I'm getting masked with the malt. And, almost everyone mentions 'complex' when talking about it and it's fruity AND citrus flavors so I'm looking forward to it though I really shouldn't have put it in a rye beer but it may be a winner!

Looking forward to hearing about your results. When it warms up outside, I'm gonna use mine in a very simple malt bill at either the IPA or Pale Ale level. Not sure which yet. But I plan on using CTZ or Magnum to bitter with, then the rest will be all Sabro.

Kegged my first use of Sabro hops (my Rye pale) and I'm impressed. I mentioned in the Year of the Yeast thread that the Imperial Dry Hop yeast did it's job with apricot but the citrus really does come thru. I was worried this might be too much going on with the yeast, different malt and this hop but I really do like how they work together. After a SMaSH that was great, just not complex enough for me, I'm hoping once carbed and settled, I will be amazed.
I am definitely going to try the rest of the Sabro I have in a hoppy pale with standard 001/05 yeast in the future to see what it's like. But, I think I'll grab more of these hops next time I see them on sale. While its too early to tell, so far I've not gotten all of what they mention though I never do. But I definitely get the citrus and tropical fruit. And that's why I think this hop works well with the Dry Hop yeast.
It imparts distinct tangerine, coconut, tropical fruit, and stone fruit aromas, with hints of cedar, mint, and cream

That's good news Paul. I'm looking forward to using mine. I should probably get on the stick and write the recipe so it's ready to go when I'm ready.
