Rye Oh Rye IPA

Post by Beer-lord »

Weather Sunday looks like a perfect day to brew. So, I'm gonna try more new things. Besides the Mecca Grade Rye malt (which people swear is vastly better than other rye malts), I'm going to brew pretty much an all Sabro beer with just a small amount of Magnum for bittering. And, then I'm trying Imperial Dry Hop yeast because-------------------wait for it-----------------------It's still the 'Year of the Yeast'.
You know, it's a damn good thing someone in this forum is trying new things! :wow: :hammer:

Reportedly, Sabro exhibits an intoxicating and complex blend of fruity and citrus flavors. It is described as an intensely unique hop, notable for its complexity of fruity and citrus flavors, including distinct tangerine, coconut, tropical fruit, and stone fruit flavors, with hints of cedar, mint, and cream.
Interesting......I wonder how that will play with the Rye. If you can taste all that, I'm going to be very impressed!

I've used HBC-438, which I think is what Sabro is the new name of.

It had the tropical coconut thing going on. But the cedar is what I found most interesting, it was noticeably different then the normal 'piney' hop flavor and at least in my beer it was more then a 'hint'.

I'm just trying to experiment and make something as different as possible and still drinkable. I've tried rye lots and many times with Simcoe or Citra or another C hop. So why not try it with something new. New rye, new hop.......I am not a conventional brewer obviously. But don't take my hop card away from me!

This one is done! Hops had a very nice, fresh smell to them.
Was a little low on my OG as I'm only getting 70% instead of 75%. I did crush the grain a little less fine but I'm getting closer to dialing it in.
