Cold Crash Guardian

Post by Kealia »

I just came across this video/product on YouTube and I have to say I'm interested:

It's cheap, simple and makes sense. I do notice after time that my kegged beers do develop a taste I an't quite put my finger on and it wouldn't surprise me to find out they are getting slightly oxidized - partially because I don't really drink a lot so kegs lat quite a while.

For <$20 I'm interested in this when they start shipping again.

Actually, I wonder if my local hardware store would have the inline one-way valve so I could build this myself....I have food-grade bags that I use for water when backpacking that would work so I would just need the one-way valve with some PSI check and the shutoff valve for the bag. Hmm.....

P.S. I added myself to their email notification list for when they come back in stock.

I ordered this 8 months ago and Bobbie told me he was getting new ones and to try back in a few months. However, unlike him, the last 3 emails have gone unanswered. 1 of which was before the lockdown. I've thought of making my own but so far, I've just wondered if what I'm doing is more than enough. I rarely have any problems at all (last time I did but I think I know why).
I added my email long ago and got nothing. Usually his customer service is impeccable!

Roger that! I'm guessing that his supply chain is the problem because I think all the parts are used by hospitals.

This would probably be useful for brewing NEIPAs or other easily oxidized beers if you can get it full of CO2 somehow (IE your tank) and attach it while full of CO2 each time after doing dry hop additions.

I received an email this morning that these were back in stock, so I ordered one.
Do I have issues with oxidation? Don't think so. But if this can help stabilize my beers longer (I don't blow through kegs quickly) then I'm willing to give it a shot.

I'll update with results when I can.

I brewed yesterday and set up my Cold Crash Guardian in my fermentation chamber. I pitched the yeast late yesterday, so not much going on when I checked this morning, but I expect it to fill up this evening. I'll keep updating~

No update on this because there is very little activity. Meaning, no blowoff, etc. I'm using Mangrove yeast for the first time and it's generating VERY little CO2, or I have a leak somewhere. I switched to an airlock this morning after looking inside the fermentor and verifying that I have krausen, so something is going on.

Can't say that I'm used to seeing so little CO2, but whatever. It is what it is. It's fermenting.

The beer I fermented with a Kveik yeast this weekend gave me no airlock activity and I'm pretty sure I have no leak. It finished in less than 2 days. Sometimes this happens in my SS Brewbucket and I can't explain why. I've seen this posted in many forums as well. It's just another of life's big questions I guess.

Update: The airlock has bubbles, just not very aggressive bubbles. So be it. I'll just have to brew again soon to test the cold crash guardian (oh, darn).

I have seen that in my Ss brewbucket also since I owned it. Started off using it with a blow-off and switched to a 3 piece and sometimes no activity but makes beer. This one I going now plugged the airlock twice and had to go back to a blow-off. I think the gasket doesn't always seal good, but will still ferment and make beer. I really like that fermenter and wouldn't mind owning another one but don't want to spend the money on something that might not get used that much. I can wait for a couple weeks to brew again.
