Hello from New York City

Hi Everyone,

I used to brew in my grad school years, back in the mid 90's. I brewed using the standard primary bucket fermenter a 5 gallon carboy and creating the mash. I only brewed 5 or 6 batches of this, along with a mead and cizer, mostly because it was so damned inconvenient and I was working for a PhD in theoretical physics, so it's not like I had a huge amount of time anyhow.

We've been very strict and uncompromising in our social distancing so I've been pursuing old and new hobbies to help pass the time, including learning Raspberry Pi, Unity, and getting back into brewing. I can't picture myself lugging around a 5 gallon carboy up and down from the basement. This is what prompted me to buy a brew demon. I'm older than I was in the mid 90's, so brewing in batches of 2 or 3 gallons is very much appreciated. Plus, being father with a full time job, I appreciate the malt extracts -- it turns an all-day affair into a literal 3 hour affair (and that includes sanitizing and cleanup!) So far, I've brewed:

Batch 1: Pale Ale (consumed)
HME: American Prophecy Ale
UME: Pale Horse - Pale Export
Ferment: 1w
Bottled: 1w

Batch 2: Nut Brown Ale (in bottles)
HME: Ye Olde Devil Nut Brown Ale
UME: Red Horse Mellow Amber
Ferment: 2w
Bottted: 1w (planning for 2 weeks, plus 1w in fridge)

Batch 3: Hard Cider (in fermenter)
Extract: Forbidden Fruit Hard Cider
Ferment: 1w (planning for 2w)
Bottled: Planning for 2w plus 1w in fridge

Batch 4: Sack Mead (planned, non-Brew Demon)
I was planning on taking a vacation day from work to start the mead this week. It's not like we're going on any vacations this year...

I have three questions.

First, what is the discount code I keep reading about?

Second, what's the connection between Brew Demon and BeerBorg? Are we all Brew Demon brewers here? Is it owned by Brew Demon?

Third, is there a way to set the forums to notify me of replies to my posts by default? That is, without my having to check the same box each time I post.

I've posted a few questions already but realized I never introduced myself. I know this community has some really great people. I'm glad to have found this place!

Welcome to the BeerBorg and welcome back to brewing. Glad you found us.

As for the members discount go to Members Only Discount and click on the Brew Demon's BeerBorg Members Discounts thread and read the directions carefully to activate the discount on your Brew Demon account.

Regarding the Brew Demon and BeerBorg connection, Beerborg is not owned by Brew Demon in anyway. Beerborg and Brew Demon started at roughly the same time and Myself and Sam (owner of Brew Demon) came to a mutually beneficial arrangement that he would promote BeerBorg in their kits and product and we would help Brew Demon brewers with questions and and help. Most of us started out with Mr. Beer kits or now Brew Demon and many of us also do different levels of brewing from Mr. Beer and Brew Demon to extract brewing or some form of all grain brewing.

Regarding Notifications, when you create a post or reply to a post there is a section below where you "Submit" for Options and Upload Attachments. Under Options check the box called "Notify me when a reply is posted. This will also be available if you edit your post.

That about covers it!
I hope I welcomed you when you first appeared, but Welcome Aboard!
We have a mix of brewers making different batch sizes and methods. Like many, I started with MrBeer and later tried BrewDemon. I preferred BrewDemon but only brewed a few of thse before moving into BIAB grain brewing. The typical trend toward bigger batches and more gear followed, but not radically. I still like to keep it simple and as inexpensive as possible. In the last year or so I have cut back on drinking to avoid weight gain. I sometimes brew extract batches for speed and convenience. The wheel goes round.
Enjoy your brewing!
