That article misses that those British IPAs were like 100% bittering hops. Metric shit tons of them. From a how they survive in bottles or age standpoint, they would be very different than any modern IPAs. They were an evolution of the old-world Burton Ales that I've made (and should make again as they were good). More malt forward with strong pithy bitterness. I used 6-8oz of EKG in those beers, all at 60 minutes. They aren't the same thing at all to what we call an IPA today, so it would be interesting to see how those fare, except that nobody makes them anymore.
