Last night I had the last beer I will drink for at least a couple of months. I am getting too close to surgery to drink anymore before the surgery and after the surgery I will be on blood thinners for 3 to 6 weeks. I am currently not sure of when I will be able to brew again. But I am going to visit that new LHBS when it opens tomorrow and stock up for when I can. I figure 6 weeks after the surgery I should be able to brew if I have a friend over to do all the lifting for me.

I'm on the wagon myself starting today but only for two weeks. Running a Tough Mudder Sat. Oct. 12 and have been lazy with working out and drinking too much beer so have to crash diet to take a few pounds off before then. Then the real diet starts to get off another 30-40 before the end of April. But I'm gonna try and allow myself a sixer a week and see if I can still drop lbs...if not then I may have to cut my favorite beverage out for awhile...

If you do your diet right a 6 pack a week while losing weight should be quite doable. I used to do that while cutting weight for powerlifting meets.

Good luck on your surgery! You know, you could just brew and not drink, that way once you have the surgery you have a hefty pipeline to keep you going since you won't be able to lift.

When I was "dieting" I cut back to 1 beer a night, so a little over a six per week, and it worked out really well, and I still got to have beer with dinner! Good luck on the Tough Mudder. I haven't run one, but I hear it's a tough mudder. (lol, sorry, terrible pun but I couldn't resist!)

I've thought of taking the 30 day sobriety check a few times. I might even do that for Lent this year.
But I really don't drink all that much, am not addicted to drinking but am addicted to brewing.

I lost 30 lbs while still drinking beer, I did/still do a beer a day at lunch figured into the carb count. I did/still average bout 3 or 4 a week.

It's actually pretty funny that a good portion of us don't drink all that much, really. I'm also in the 4-5 range per week, unless there is a party/BBQ where I will have 2-3 over the course of an evening. On a typically week, it's rare that I drink more than 1 with dinner, and that's not every night.

Getting back on topic - good luck with the surgery Roger.

I hope your surgery goes well, Roger, and that you're back brewing and enjoying that homebrew before too long.

I'm sure your dog will be aware and surprise you with patience and compromise post surgery; they are amazing in how they will recognize and adapt to change from my experience, they seem to "know" in advance and calmly respond accordingly.

And if you are still worried about being alone during recovery you could always ask some co-workers/ friends to be a check up team locally not to mention sticking with the your friends on the for moral support through any difficult parts.

All home brewers will have some unexpected thing put a hole in the pipeline so don't stress about that it will recover in time after you are recovered and your recovery is the most important thing right now.
