Re: Cicerones are stupid

Hmmm, I would have to disagree with Popular Mechanics. Without cicerones, breweries wouldn't really know if they were making their products consistently from batch to batch. Having someone take a sip from two batches and declare "Tastes about the same to me!" is not nearly as useful as som...

Re: Brewing and Malting Science - Case Study

You actually use hydrometers vs. some fancy automated measuring do-hicky? Absolutely, yes. I didn't meet a single brewer at my class that doesn't use a hydrometer in the brewhouse. With that said, very large breweries also confirm these results in a lab with a densitometer. That's $$$, and most sma...

Re: Brewing and Malting Science - Case Study

So for some reason, I stopped receiving email notifications of responses on this thread, so I thought (wrongly) it had died. Boy was I wrong! I really like your spirited discussion of this issue! And you'll be pleased to know that our team mentioned everything you guys discussed (in addition to othe...

Re: Brewing and Malting Science - Case Study

Perhaps dumb but my first thought would be to compare the milling of the old vs. the new and see if the crush is actually the same. Maybe the new has slightly smaller or otherwise different structure. Maybe the husks are less brittle / more flexible. And I think perhaps I would also do my own indep...

Brewing and Malting Science - Case Study

So, Oct 24 - Nov 3, I will be attending the MBAA Brewing and Malting Science class. It's two weeks of very intensive study of the biology, chemistry, and physics of beer-making in every step of the process. As an engineer and science nerd, I'm really looking forward to it! We received our class rost...

Re: Rumors-did AB/InBev buy Northern Brewer and Midwest?

You won't see a "buy and phase out" strategy here. AB InBev is getting closer to the end consumer by this move. They will invest in the business, probably dramatically increasing their ecommerce presence, and I would expect that they'd slowly explore rolling out retail locations. THIS. Th...

Welcome, Don! Glad to have you here! How wonderful that homebrew has made you healthier! I'll drink to that! :fedora: I work with a lot of folks from South Africa (My company used to be partly owned by SAB Miller, until this past Tuesday.) Anyway, I digress... nice to see you here! Cheers!

Re: Rumors-did AB/InBev buy Northern Brewer and Midwest?

So, this is kinda-sorta but not really true. The news in my Inbox this morning is that AB In Bev has "partnered" with Northern Brewer, though they are not releasing any details of the terms of the partnership. Northern is maintaining that they are "still a family-owned local business&...
