Do I have a problem?

Post by Beer-lord »

I don't use my Better Bottle all that much except when I do a double batch or two batches close to each other and tomorrow is a double batch.
While cleaning it today I noticed a crack developing in the inside. You can't feel it at all on the outside but and only slightly on the inside but I think it's going to be trouble soon.
I filled it with water and it did not leak so I'm going to use this tomorrow than likely trash it. May even get a second SS Brewtech.

Anyone have a BB and run into this?

I don't have a BB. But I would put it in another vessel to catch leaks. If you have an LHBS, why not pick up a bucket?

It's plastic.
John, I'm not into buckets anymore (or barrels) :) and it's had a full amount of water in it all day with no leaks so I'll take a chance and watch it very closely but it's going to be recycled after this brew. I fear 1 hard hit and it's done and am at least a tiny bit concerned what will happen when I cold crash but, I am a rebel!

I have a 5 gal. plastic BB too and after reading your post I looked at it and seems to be ok. I don't use it much anymore except for wine sometimes and it is filled with water now. I thought you also had a big mouth bubbler? I am also spoiled on the Ss brewbucket and sometimes think I would like a second one, but a lot of money if didn't get used much. I would use it for this batch and retire it after.

I'm screwed then.
Still wondering what do I want to use/get as a second fermenter. I keep forgetting I have a very nice, but large, Speidel 7.9 gallon fermenter I may use instead. It won't fit in my fermenting cooler with the SS Brewtech so I really need something that would fit in with it and I do like the Big Mouth.***** The Speidel is awesome but may also be too tall to fit in my fridge but I may use it this summer out of the fridge when I use that new Kveik yeast that everyone seems to like that can get to 95+ and still come clean.
Not sure I want to spend the $$$ for a second SS Brewtech but maybe for my birthday I'll treat myself.

*****FYI-I said earlier I have a Better Bottle but it's a Big Mouth Bubbler. I have old man's disease.

All I know is it gives me the heebee jeebies, because exploding glass carboys do that to you when you experience it first hand.

Luckily it's not glass. And hopefully not explody.

I totally agree, cut the crap out of my hands with broken glass carboys and had a lot of them at one time, not no more. I really like my Ss brewtec bucket but cost. Look into anvil ss about 1/2 price and good reviews.

Just tried my SS Brewtech with the Speidel and it's a very tight fit but will work if I put the Speidel in first. Gonna give that a try tomorrow and see how it works out. Haven't used it in years because I thought it wouldn't work. Dumb me should have tried it out long ago.

I'd be more comfortable with a crack on the outside than a crack on the inside.

A crack on the outside could be a sign of potential structural problems.

A crack on the inside could be a sign of structural problems and a spot for bacteria to hide until they can infect your batch.
