Duh....

Post by FrozenInTime »

Welp, had a moment the other day. I crushed up some grains for a session red, had grains, hops and yeast all ready to go on the counter. I use a Grain Father, have for years now and have just about forgotten how to brew over a burner. Set all my equipment ready to go, then something caught my eye.... I really felt/feel like a ding-bat. The wort chiller... I had to have forgotten to clean it last time I brewed. I saw thick, ugly black mold on the inside of the line. ARGGGGGGG. I debated then decided heck, I drink this beer and don't want to chance getting nasty black mold in my beer or transfer any of it to the rest of my equipment. I put the grains in a bag, hops and yeast in da chill box, cleaned/inspected the rest of the equipment and put every thing away for another day. I am or was a little mad at myself so tossed the chiller and waited a couple days to order a new chiller for my brewing. That's when I really realized how a Doh''' moment was an expensive moment. Dingy.....

I've done that before, I was just too bummed about it. I could have sat it outside for 10 minutes, we've been below zero so it would have chilled quick. Thank goodness the temps have rose back to (normal?). New chiller will be here first of the week but now I'm wondering about my time frame as we plan to exit here fairly soon to a warmer area for a while.

I've slow chilled exclusively for at least 3 years now. I don't even know where my wort chiller is, it is likely looking pretty nasty lol.

Received new chilla today but likely won't use it now as in about 2 weeks we're playing snowbird. I guess I've gotten lazy with my brewing, what little I do. It's so quick/easy to use the Grainfather I don't brew any other way. I'm thunking come spring I need to drag out my pots and lp burner and do a slow brew day to get back to basics.

We're headed to the Gulfport area, I wonder it there's any good local HB places to visit?
