Forget pints - the new beer trend is SACHETS: Brewer says his just-add-water mix tastes 'just as good' as the original thing
An Alaskan brewer has managed to brew a concentrated form of beer that, he claims, tastes and smells as good as a traditional pint
Concentrate simply requires water being added and being carbonated shortly before it is drunk
Will launch in the Canada and U.S. in September but it is hoped that portable drink will be available in Europe soon

Enjoying the great outdoors has spawned an entire market catering for campers who want to enjoy a hearty meal without overloading their rucksack.
Camping shops now sell a whole range of dried, lightweight foods - from all day breakfasts to chicken tikka masalas.
But now a new - and some might say revolutionary - addition to their food shelf has been added: Dried beer.

A Canadian brewer has managed to create a concentrate that simply requires water being added and carbonated shortly before it is drunk.
Pat's Backcountry Beverages has managed to create a near waterless formulation that claims to offer all the taste, aroma and alcohol of the traditional beverage.

Sam Hobbs, director of sales at the company, told MailOnline that while the beer is not yet on sale, it will soon be available to the public: 'We're hoping to launch it early to mid-September and it should costs around $9.95 (£6.44) for a four pack.'
The beer will be available in the U.S. and Canada but they have plans to expand their business.
'We definitely want to offer our products to the UK and the rest of Europe eventually, but I can't say when that will be at the moment.'
The website explains that unlike other concentrate processes, their concentrate is not simply a case of brewing the beer and then removing the water afterwards.
Instead, their patent-pending process enables brewers to start with almost no water, and carefully control the environment of the fermentation.
Mr Hobbs' lips were tightly sealed when probed about the precise nature of the process however.
The carbonation system costs $39.95 (£25.84) and is light and easily portable.
When the sachets are launched, each will make one pint of beer.
There will also be two flavours - one will be a pale ale and the other will be a black ale.

Interesting...If we "carefully control the environment of the fermentation", how long do we have to be camping before it's ready? I'm usually a 1-2 night camper, but it may come in handy for the zombie apocalypse!

interesting concept. Funny thing is, most of the time.. some one has a "new idea" and then others start to think about it and you have a bunch of variations on the same idea.
Now my question is:
do they remove the alcohol, save it for reinjection AFTER the water is removed or...do they keep that in a seperate section to mix with the dehydrated malt.
I'm thinking (never a good thing) that they remove the Alcohol and reinject it to the "sachets" and then you add water and carb.
anyone else wanna take a shot at guessing how it's done?

Place a teaspoon of MB HME in a plastic cup (no glass allowed at the campground) add sparkling water and stir well open small enclosed package of everclear stir. :fillup

I would think it would be non-alcoholic, but adding in spirits would be what gets the job done.

That is my only guess.

Not non-alcoholic, and no added spirits necessary. It's essentially non-carbonated fermented beer that has been condensed. They are doing the "carefully control[ed] environment [for] fermentation," as the beverage is already fermented. Takes maybe 10 minutes tops to go from fermented extract to carbonated beer. I've been following this story a bit for the last year or so. I'm thinking of getting the little carbonation cup thingee for homebrew use. You can simply take wort out of your fermenter, add it to the carbonation unit, and get a carbed beer. Good for taste tests and the like, and also good for beers that I didn't carb properly, I suppose. The outdoor store near my work has these in stock, but currently only the soda extracts are available.

I'm thinking a concentrate is never as good as the original.... Think OJ, instant coffee, powdered lemonade.... they work, but never as good. Besides, if I can't spend 5 hours brewing, I may have to do something on "the list"...

This might be interesting, if it tasted any good, for things like hiking / camping. Places you don't want to bring a case of beer into.

I love backpacking and I love beer but I have no interest in this. When I want to take beer with me I just pack it cans and deal with the extra weight until I drink them and crush the cans to pack out.

That sir, is where you need the 3 gallon keg back pack system. Found where ever home do it yourselfers are found...not in your location.
