Sours

Post by jivex5k »

Who likes em?
I had the pleasure of having this beer Tuesday at a bottle share: Image

My god it was good...oh so sour, oh so tasty.
I liked it so much I've set up a trade with a guy in CO for the 25th when their next sour is released. Mmmm can't wait.

We haven't tried any yet.
What are they all about from a newbie standpoint?
I can't wrap my head around the idea of an intentionally infected beer or a sour tasting beer.

I don't know...it...they are just awesome tasting once you get past that sourness.
But, I suppose it's like learning to appreciate a good bourbon. Over time your palate adjusts, and you come to realize the depth of flavor present behind the sourness.
My first encounter was unintentional, but since then I've had enough sours that I love them now.
A good starter sour would be Lindemans Goudenband, it's available in a lot of places and not too sour.

There's just something about them...

I can agree with you on one thing. There's just something about them...

But hey, I don't like liver and onions either. To each their own... :happybeer:

Yeah I feel ya,
Personally I can't stand white ales or witbiers...
And I enjoy the fact that not many people like sours, makes them easier for me to get!
But there's gotta be someone on this forum who likes em...
C'mon, no one is brewing a Berliner-Weisse?
No one has a Gueze going?

I tried one last fall, not in a hurry to try another..... I know, if people stopped drinking beer after the first one they didn't like.... maybe a taste of one sometime I guess...

I like whisky and bourbon sours, not too crazy about sour beers, though.

I've tried some sour beers although they aren't really my thing. I do tend to like the sour and sweet fruit beers like some of the fruit lambics. But not so sweet as Lindemans. I am also starting to find enjoyment in berliner weisses now.

I LOVE sour beers - they are so complex and tasty. A great "intro" sour style is Flanders Red - a couple great examples are Duchesse Du Burgenone and Monk's Cafe. If you have not had a sour beer, try these!

I have a 9 month old Flanders Red in a carboy.... Gonna let it sit another 6-9 months before even thinking about bottling.
In Soviet Russia, beer brews you!
My brews
Fermenting:
Strawberry Rhubarb Wheat (5-gal)(AG)
Cranberry Mead
Buck-Flower Mead
Flanders Red (5-gal)(AG) x 2
On Tap:
Hefeweizen (5-gal)(AG)
Oaked Pear Cider

I have no problem trying sours. Some I like, others not so much. I'm going to have to look for that Averys now. I need to get a Berliner Weisse going and see what brewing a sour is like.

I've had a few sours to date. I really enjoy framboise, and I also had a white lambic that was just awesome. then i've had festina peche that was just gross. i'm down w/ the funk! but there's a threshold of how much sour I can handle. JimJohnson and I have been collaborating to design a Kentucky Common that is described as a sour brown ale. I'm excited to try it, but it means sacrificing a fermenter to brew only sour beers in.

My wife who doesn't drink (I know, right) has fallen in love with a Kriek/Lambic Black Cherry. So I now must explore making sour fruit beers.

When I finally brew a sour it's gonna be a berliner so I don't have to wait so long.
