Pliny the Elder

Post by BlackDuck »

Here is the recipe that I'll be brewing this Saturday. This is the AG kit from Austin Homebrew Supply. I bought this kit when it was buy one get one free deal. I am planning on brewing this exactly to their directions the first time. The only adjustment will be made is the sparge process. I batch sparge, the directions are for a continuous sparge. IF it needs to be adjusted for some reason, I'll make the changes on the second batch in the future.

I literally drool as I read this but one question.......when you got the free one, didn't you say you were going donate it to charity? I though you said it was going to the Charity to Help Paul brew Pliny the Elder!
Your donations are tax deductible and each donator will receive one bomber of the completed beer.

I'm thinking of sticking to the recipe I have, which we discussed is a little different (I think Jeff's is the same as mine) but doing 6 gallons. Just need to grab some Columbus since I'm low on that.
Send me the odors when you drop the first hop addition in.

Hhmmmm....I wonder what would happen if you dried some hop cones, crumpled them up, rolled them, then smoked 'em. Talk about the ultimate in flavor and aroma. Maybe then you could actually drink a coors lite and it would seem like you were getting some flavor from it!!!

I can pretty much guarantee someone, somewhere has done this. I'm guessing the result wasn't pleasant either.

well, with hops being in the same family as marijuana, someone somewhere probably thought they would get high by smoking hops cones. at the very least, it'd taste smoky and citrusy? lol

Good luck on the brew day Chris. Mine has been on the gas for 2 weeks now. It tastes exactly like the real thing, of course I've never had the real thing. So it may not taste anything like it :laugh, but it's not a bad beer at. I can see what the hype is about. Within the next week I will bottle a six pack and get it out to the appropriate people. I'll let everyone know when it's on the way.

30 minutes left in the mash....I ground these grains up a little finer than the past. Hopefully, this will help my efficiency issues.

I'm sitting at a Firestone waiting to be picked up and the breeze is mostly from the south but I think I got a whiff of Columbus hops.
You going commando all the way or bagging them?

I am doing both. Hop sacks for the boil additions and commando for the 0 minute and dry hop additions.

All done...just waiting on the S-05 for a couple more minutes before I aerate it and lock it up until dry hop day. My predicted OG was 1.069 and I hit 1.061. So I guess I improved on the efficiency a little bit by getting a better crush. I still need to work on it though. Maybe even a finer crush and a better sparge method. My volumes this time were really good. The top amount was supposed to be 1.5 gallons and I only had to top up with 1.25 gallons. The gravity sample tasted pretty darn good too. Now it's time to clean this mess up.
