Do I really have a 15 gallon kettle?

Although you don't need a mash ton or other things to do BIAB, you still need the right sfuff to brew it right!

Do I really have a 15 gallon kettle?

Post by Beer-lord »

This is my kettle with about 12.5 gallons of beer. Does it look like there's 2.5 gallons of space left? I'm thinking it's not really a true 15 gallon kettle.

Yikes...that looks pretty tight. I'm not sure you could fit another 2.5 gallons either. How wide is it?

I'm sure your OCD will kick in eventually and you'll measure 15 gallons of water to see if it fits. There is no way possible that you will sleep until you know for sure. :jumpy: :jumpy:

It's 17" wide by 16" high. Who's the math wiz who can figure out that?
My OCD has been cured. It's amazing what a few beers on a day off can do.

How will he know for sure that what he is using to measure each gallon is accurate? :o :lol:

Volume of a (vertical) cylinder...

V = pi * r2 * h

So...

V = 3.14159 * (8.5 inches * 8.5 inches) * 16 inches

V = 3631.68 in3 (that's inches cubed)

That should answer your question!

What? No, not yet?

Ok, then...

1 cubic inch = 0.00432900433 US gallons

Sooo... 3631.68 in3 * 0.00432900433 gallons = 15.72 gallons

Oh yeah, answer is yes and I need a beer!

My head and my arse hurts after that. I suck at math but excel in history. :)
So you're saying my pot is more than 15 gallons?

Yup, almost 3/4 gallon more... If your measurements were correct, that is...

Yep, they are correct. I can still use a tape measure even though I can't do calculus.
Thanks for the brain buster info. :)

WTG, BigPapaG!

I may be late to this party, but when the wort expands as it boils, I imagine you'll need every bit of that "excess" space over 15 gal.

BTW:

Every inch of level increase in THAT pot is 0.9825 gallons...

So, for future use, you can approximate a gallon an inch and only be off by a quart on a full pot!
