I have to admit this summer was not easy with all the work travel I had to do and the long hours I had to put in when I wasn't traveling. When I finally did get home from my travels a bulk of the time was spent either getting things done around the house that had been waiting for me or spending time with the family so I really didn't have a lot of opportunity to brew and honestly didn't have the energy to get all the equipment together and go buy the ingredients needed to brew.
Now with my travel schedule being in a lull and work hours lessened I've been thinking more about what to brew, especially with the harvesting of my hops a few weeks ago. I've been trying to figure out what I should brew using these hops and really show off the characteristic of these Nugget hops. Then as I was reading the blog from my local brewery the mentioned that they had a limited edition Single Malt, Single Hop IPA that they had produced using Liberty hops, and it hit me that a SMaSH brew would be a simple way for me to really see how my nugget hops tasted and smelled. I did a little research and decided on the following recipe. The only thing that I am still undecided about is what yeast to use. My first thought was to go with just a simple Safale American US-05, but then I was wondering If I should use something like WLP029 German Ale/ Kölsch Yeast that tends accentuates hop flavors. Suggestions? Thoughts on what yeast or the recipe as a whole?

Re: Harvest Nugget SMaSH
I've only used Nugget sparingly so I don't know much about it but if you really want to know what the hops are about, I'd stick to a clean yeast like 05. The 029 will definitely give it a different taste profile.
By the way, my Nugget hops are 14.5% alpha......a pretty big difference but who knows what part of the country mine came from.

Re: Harvest Nugget SMaSH
I have never tried it with Maris Otter so would be interested it seeing how it turns out. This is the recipe that I make for SWMBO as it is one of her favorites. Generally I make this in the 6% range, but during football season we tend to go thru a bit more brews so dialed this back to a more sessionable level (plus, was still dialing in my new tun's efficiency so was off by a couple of points truth be told). Strangely, there is very little difference in taste or feel from the 6% to 5% so I just very well may leave this to be the house session when I get all the tap online. The US-05 did keep things nice and clean so as to let everthing shine through.

Thanks for posting that recipe DaYooper that looks like a good recipe and also makes me think I'm on the right track with this SMaSH.

Dont forget to lemme know how it turns out, although the wife may kill me if Marias Otter doesnt give her the taste she looks forward to. Quite frankly, just put a keg on gas and cant remember if it is the Clutter Buster or Centennial Blonde. Guess I will know come this weekend.

I had to put off brewing this until next weekend but you're close enough to me here in the "D" that mayby we could exchange a beer or 2 once I have this bottled up.DaYooper wrote:Dont forget to lemme know how it turns out, although the wife may kill me if Marias Otter doesnt give her the taste she looks forward to.
