The Big Dump
No, not a crude bathroom reference. Dumping beer. There are a few batches that did not work out. Some infected, some failed recipes, some unsatisfactory HMEs. I kept them hoping they would improve. The infected ones, originally only suspect, got worse. Suspicions confirmed. The other ones just aren't good enough. I'm not going back to drinking Miller 64, and I'm not drinking other poor beer, even if I made it. Especially if I made it. So, I've started pouring out beer on the back hill. 20 bottles the other day, dozens to go. The infected bottles go to the curb for recycling, the mediocre ones back into rotation, my own recycling.

Our glass isn't actually recycled. It's crushed up and used in pavement.

I made this same decision a long time ago. With so many great beers I won't drink anything that I don't really like.John Sand wrote:...and I'm not drinking other poor beer, even if I made it. Especially if I made it.
Sorry to hear about the issues.
Re: The Big Dump
John, what are you fermenting in? You might want to think about all new hoses, buckets and siphons and basically start over. I hear this hits almost all brewers sooner or later and I'm not 100% sure my below average beers haven't suffered from this as well.

Re: The Big Dump
Thanks guys. Beer Lord, these were mostly from prior equipment that I have replaced. One batch, the WCIPA, was in my Ale Pail. But the bucket was pretty new then, and thorough sanitation seems to have cured it. The 11 batches since show no trouble. I'm brewing ahead. There are actually two more batches that may not be good enough to drink. But I'm still giving them time.

Re: The Big Dump
John I have some old bottles as well. They were a MB "Oval Office" recipe and the POR hops did not work with honey malt; these were terrible beers.
I need to dump them but right now they are the only bottles in my beer closet and I can't bare to see it entirely empty.
From my experience so far few beers that started bad got better with age. That being said I think there are a few things it is widely acknowledged will condition out.
Sorry for your loss friend. Now GET TO BREWING!

Bear...?
If you can't bare it, isn't that good? Wouldn't BB2 be upset to see you strutting around naked as a "Jay Bird" staring at the beer closet?

As ever, a quick turn to the bizarre. It's why I feel at home here.
Thanks BB. I'm actually pretty good on the pipeline. Close to finishing the APA and Amber, just started on the IPA and another APA, just bottled the Punkin-Head. If the Blonde ever conditions, I'll be fat (literally. Okay, I'm not thin now.) And with the success of the IPA, I'm itching to brew another. Though, my back is giving me fits right now. But still, I'm doing great. I just posted a Happy Brewer thread. This beer dump is putting away past failures. Like burying an old relationship. (Not necessarily literally, although...)

Well you ALMOST got it.staring at the beer closet?
Bare as in bare closet as in empty closet as in no beer in bare closet. Somebody put his leash back on.

Re: The Big Dump
Obviously I would not do it with infected beers, but I generally save the subpar ones for marinating unless they are really subpar.

Re: The Big Dump
A good idea Yoop. I may keep a few aside for that. I've actually rescued some by mixing them too. But that seems cumbersome, and they take up room in the fridge.

Re: The Big Dump
Luckily all of my infected beers over the last 3 years have been with my house Brett C strain, and I actually like the flavors it makes, so I have only had to dump those inside myself.
