The Randall Jr.

Post by Beer-lord »

This week I bought the Randall Jr from Dogfish Head and plan to buy some leaf hops (which works better with this unit) to play around with beers both homebrew and store bought. With it I can overhop (yea, that's what I dream of at night) add cinnamon, spices or coffee and vanilla to stouts, porters, the sky's the limt. Just a waste of money I can play with.
And, I hope I can take some poor homebrew and kick it up a notch. Prolly money not well spent and just an impulse buy (along with a DFH hat and 4 glass pint set) but I had a bad day at week this week and at lunch, had a week moment.

I've thought about picking one of these up a while back as a way to infuse fruit into my beer at drinking time, as opposed to brewing with fruit and losing some of the sweetness from it. Does it hold carb well enough after pouring into the glass?

Yeah, I was wondering about that, too. I looked at these yesterday. Kind of a novelty plaything as you said but hey, brewing is supposed to be fun, right?

I can't type...it's Randall, not Fandall so I fixed it.
Yep, all just a waste of money or a way to make a crappy beer taste and/or smell better. My wife will use it for her ice tea as she loves the fresh mint from the garden (well, from the weeded area) in her tea. Can be used hot or cold I think.

I don't see anything wrong with using beer or brewing to help wash away any bad memories from work or anything else. Enjoy it for what it is, it's always fun to have a new toy to figure out how to use.

I looked at these at a local tea store (it's a rebranded Tea Tiger, though the 2.0 versions are 16oz, and I think the Tea Tiger is 12oz) a few years ago and almost pulled the trigger on it. Will be interested to hear how it goes.

Got the Randall Jr yesterday and looked around the internets for what other folks have tried and got quite a lot of ideas. I think I may just start out with some leaf hops and see how they change the flavor of some commercial beers first. Just for shytes and giggles, here's a few other ideas I've found:
Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter with Candied Bacon Bits.Sprinkle the brown sugar on the bacon and bake in the oven. Make a bunch so you can snack on some strips while you wait for your beer to be ready.

Southern Peach - Southen Star Bombshell Blonde with peaches was awesome!

Mango Maharaja - I put the majority of the mango in and filled it to the top. Fantastic!

Hop Wallop with half of a grapefruit was probably my favorite.

Founders Breakfast stout with Texas pecan roasted coffee was awesome too.

Pineapple infused Heady Topper. Just don't use too much Pineapple. Done right it is stellar.

I just tried Stone Enjoy By infused with Pineapple and Lime! Was delicious for sure

(this one can't be real, can it?)1 can of Vienna sausages, 1 cup of Vienna lager.

Finally, here's a site with a few exotic ideas.... http://drinks.seriouseats.com/2013/05/r ... -nibs.html
