Karma, and other musings from Jivex5k

Post by jivex5k »

Funny story....
I call a local Crown Wine and Spirits to see if they have Jai Alai in stock.
They said yes, so I went to retrieve it.
Turns out inventory was off, and I am one sad panda....so I get a Terrapin Moo hoo, never had it.
Well, I'm sitting there in line, or standing rather, and the guy in front of me is super nice.
He says: "Hey, put your beer on the counter man, I hate standing and holding it!."
I replied: "Thanks man" and put down the beer, remarking: "Eh it's only a four pack, but when I'm at Total Wine with 3 bottles and a 4 pack it helps out a lot."
Then he rings up a $74.00 of wine.
"Damnnnnn" I said with levity "that's one expensive bottle of wine. I thought beer was expensive!"
He laughed, and asked me: "How is that Moo Hoo anyways?"
"Well", I replied, "I've never had it, but based on Terrapin's Wake n Bake it's probably good."
"Ah, I don't really like that one" he surmises.
"A bit too sweet for ya right?" I inquired.
"Yup, just too much for me."
So he pays, and as he's paying he hands the clerk an extra 20.
"Get this guy his beer, and keep the change." he says to the clerk.
I was so caught off guard I didn't realize what he meant, only when he was at the door did I realize he bought my beer.
"Thanks man!!!" I shouted at him enthusiastically from across the store.
What a great day! I ended up going to the local bar nearby since I saved some cash, had a couple of local microbrews and chatted with the bartender about beer and my voice.
She always talks about my voice for some reason, lol, I mean I have a cool voice and all but she loves it.
The best part was they still had their Raspberry Berliner....mmmm so tart and sweet at the same time. So goooood.

So you know, life can be pretty nice sometimes.

That is so cool. I've heard of people paying for smoothies or burgers in drive thru's but never been on the receiving end.

I hope you pay it forward.

That's awesome man! Kinda like those stories you hear about someone buying another person's groceries, except for beer in this case! That raspberry berliner sounds pretty tasty. Where's that place at? My wife and I are fixin to head down to Miami for labor day weekend.

I work at a school, and once in a while, when a kid has no money, I buy the lunch. The payback to me is I get to see a happy grateful kid...

Gotta love when people do nice things, whether you are on the giving or receiving end. That is what makes the world go round...

Very cool when that happens. Have done it a few times in the drive thru at Starbucks. Been on both the giving and receiving end. Feels just as good either way!

It's called:
The Funky Buddha

They have a lounge (where they started out, actually it's the second location but the first is closed.)
They also have a brewery with a huge tasting room, HUGE. And cornhole and giant jenga and sports.

So here's the skinny:
Lounge is what I prefer. It's smaller, more intimate, and TBH the beers are better. They still brew on premises at the lounge so the beers are smaller batches and generally have been higher quality. The food is incredibly mediocre, I'd eat before you go. The beer and bartenders make up for it though. They usually release a new beer every Thursday, but they have good guest taps and solid core beers.
Hop Gun IPA is really good and always there. They just released No Crust this week, I think tomorrow it taps, it's a peanut butter and jelly beer that will change your outlook on life.

Now, the brewery has some advantages:
1. You can get growlers.
2. More space, better if the lounge is crowded.
3. If you're into sports, or cornhole, they have you covered.
4. Food trucks come every night I believe at 5pm, good food most of the time, varys from truck to truck.

To avoid a bunch of college kids going to the lounge I'd recommend getting there earlier, around 8:30pm is when they start showing up.
The brewery is big enough to not worry about a crowd.

Addresses:
Funky Buddha Brewery
1201 NE 38th Street
Oakland Park, FL 33334
954-440-0046

Funky Buddha Lounge and Brewery
2621 N Federal Highway
Boca Raton, FL ‎33431
561-368-4643

You won't find the Raspberry Berliners or other, actually sour berliners at the brewery. Go to the lounge if you want a nice sour.
The berliners change often too, just a couple days ago it was a Mango berliner, and the day before it was an apple brandy berliner.

That pb&j beer really sounds like a religious experience. I'm always down w/ the food truck scene. Many times they'll have food as good or better than most restaurants for less. I'm familiar w/ Boca and Oakland Park. If I can convince SWMBO and maybe my brother and friends to check it out, I think I'd take your advice and hit up the lounge. I think I would suggest a guava berliner and see if that takes off. Thanks for the info, jive!

NP man, they actually did a Guava Jasmine Berliner a couple months back.
It wasn't sour enough for me, but the sour is back in full force now.
Phil, the sour guy, told me they were experimenting with the sourness levels and have come full circle.

That's excellent news. Out of curiosity, would they have something like a framboise or kriek (not necessarily on tap, could be in bottles)? My wife doesn't really like the taste of beer, except for those lambics because she likes the lack of bitterness, and emphasized sweetness of the fruit.

TBH I don't order bottles from them. I've looked at the list once or twice when I first found the place, they had a lot listed but I don't remember specifically any lambics, but they should have Timmerman's at least.
They make a solid hefe she might like as well, it's on the sweeter side. Super banana flavor.

Hopefully you'll get lucky when you're in town and they will have something special on tap.
Let me know if you want to meet up, I love bsing about good beer and homebrewing, and I'm only 15 minutes from the place.
