It's finally come the time and it's hard

Post by teutonic terror »

My wife and I have been discussing if, and when, to put our
oldest dog Teanie, down because of her health issues.

We had thought about Monday, until last night.
Teanie has been somewhat lame, deaf and blind for the last few months.
Last night, after trotting across the yard, she slipped on the thresh hold at the door
and now she can't hardly get up or walk by herself.
She pants alot, and she lays by her food and water dish when she eats.

Now it looks like tomorrow is a definite.
She is thinking early in the day because she is suffering.
Asking prayers and thoughts from the BORG, because this is a tremendous decision
to make individually.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as this is always a decision that does not come easily. I think if they could tell us they would say it's ok and thanks for the great life and all your love, now hows about another bisky.

That is not an easy thing to deal with. I've had 2 cats and a dog that I had to have put down in the past and it was very hard for me. The biggest thing that help me dealing with it is that I knew it was the best thing for them at that time. I hated seeing them suffer and I to have them finally be at peace was great consolation. My thought are with you and your family!

It's never easy to do this, but the pain and turmoil is because of our own feelings. Really, it's the most merciful thing you can do, and the last loving act to the pet you've lavished such love on for all these years.

I'm sorry you have to face this. But you know it's the best thing to do. Release your beloved dog. End the suffering.

I really feel bad for you, your wife and Teanie, it is a very hard thing to do. I've had to do it quite a few times over the years and it is the best thing for all no matter how bad it seems. You just have to think of the good life you gave her and the pleasure she gave you. My prayers are with you my friend because it is a hard choice to make.

I've never had to do that, so the only thing that I can offer are my thoughts and prayers to all of you during this difficult time.

I'm so sorry to hear that. When we had to put Shadow down I was still driving. My son came up and took her to the vet so my youngest boy wouldn't have to see anything. I was in Boise at the time. Cried myself to sleep that night. I'll be thinking about you guys

I'm sorry you have to make this decision but it really does seem like you know it's the right time. You don't want to see her suffer.

I'm so sorry that you have to go through this. I went through it once, almost 30 years ago. A few days before we put Topaz to sleep I believe she knew it was time and was telling me so. I came home, late because I was in my 20s. She greeted me and pressed herself against my leg. It was the way she did it, she was ready to die. My sister brought us to the vet a few days later, I had Topaz wrapped in a blanket. The veterinarian's assistant, a young girl, said maybe there's things we can do. The vet interrupted and assured us that there was nothing to do. My mother and I held her when the doctor gave her the needle. She let out a little yelp from the needle and went to sleep, seemingly without further pain.

She was a wonderful dog but was shaking and peeing and at the end of her life. The one thing I will say is that anyone who loves their dog will never put them to sleep too soon.

You are doing the right thing and it will hurt but it is the right thing.

It's never an easy thing to do TT, but as loving pet owners we know that it will come one day. We like to think that we are going to be strong, but we never can prepare ourself for it and it hurts our hearts. Please know that we are here for you and your wife as you go through this.

Amen, and agreed 100%. For as painful as it might be, it's what we owe them for the unconditional love that they give us and the pure love they teach us about. I've had to do this more times than I care to remember and each one takes a bit of my heart with them. Every time I think about it, I both cry and smile and I think it honors their memory in some way.
