I am making a Double IPA which calls for double dry-hop addition, one for 4 days and a separate one for 3 days.
The once or twice that I've done double dry-hop additions before, I've done them sequentially: add one, remove it, add the second, remove it.
But I'm wondering if it would be just as effective to do them simultaneously -- add the 4-day addition first, then the following day add the 3-day addition, and then remove them both at the same time.
Any thoughts or experiences anyone would care to share? Thanks in advance!

Double dry-hopping - opinions

I'm not particularly crazy (IMO), and I don't rock-climb. It's just the name of a video game I used to like to play, back in the 80's.

I do this all the time. 5 days then. 3 days. I really like what that adds to the nose.
But, I usually use different hops for each day . Or go 50-50 on both additions. You need this amount of hops in a double IPA to help balance it.
What hops are you using?

Re: Double dry-hopping - opinions
It's a recipe I came up with based on a few Heady Topper clone recipes I found around the web.
I'm doing it as a 4-gallon recipe, for equipment reasons.
Dry Hop 1: 4 days -
0.75 oz Chinook
0.75 oz Citra
0.75 oz Simcoe
Dry Hop 2: 3 days -
1 oz Centennial
1 oz Simcoe
My question was triggered by thinking, "do I need 7 elapsed days to accomplish this, or can I get the same effect in 4 days by doing them simultaneously?"
In other words: day 1, add DH#1....day 2, add DH#2....day 4, remove both.
Or, am I better off just doing DH#1 for 4 days followed by DH#2 for 3 days?
Life or death, it ain't! Just curious what the Borg thinks, or has experienced.

I haven't tried. But Brulosopher did an Exbeeriment and found no difference.

Re: Double dry-hopping - opinions
Personally, I like what you posted for the dry hopping.
I wouldn't remove any at all. You can even go 7 days before you'd likely notice any of the grassiness some say they get but I've gone 9 days and never noticed any grassiness.
In my IPA's now, I usually go with 5 days but the last 2 are cold crash days which probably doesn't get me much more out of the hops.

I've not done a schedule like you've posted but from what I've read from brewers like Vinnie at Russian River it does make a difference to stagger them.
Re: Double dry-hopping - opinions
I'm with Beer-lord on not removing them too. Just leave them in. And if you cold crash, don't count the cold crash days into the dry hop days. At least I don't.
And Kealia is right too...some of the really hoppy beers out there like Russion River's have a really staggered schedule. And those beers are awesome, so it must do something righteous.!!!

Re: Double dry-hopping - opinions
Thanks, guys, for the input - it's very much appreciated. I have decided to go with the staggered approach, figuring if it's good enough for Vinnie Cilurzo, it's good enough for me.
