Not another Hop growing Thread
I didn't want to ask questions in Phils and the other Hop growing threads, but I have a few questions..
1} How is this company to buy from http://www.freshops.com? I've never done business with them.
2} These are the varieties I'm considering: Cascade, Chinook, Mt. Hood, and Nugget. 2 rhizomes of each.
How do these sound?
My main idea is to grow the type of hops that I use a lot of in PA's and IPA's. Other styles of beer I make I'd just as soon buy those hops as needed for what I'm brewing.

It sounds good. Hops are not hard to grow. You should separate them, so they don't intermix. Not all rhizomes grow, but 4/5 of mine did. It takes a couple of years for them to really produce, but there are plenty of guides online.

Re: Not another Hop growing Thread
Thanks John for the reply. I ordered 8 tonight and some twine. I had to get on this fast if I was to get them in the ground this year. I have been planning on doing this for sometime but always put it off until it was too late. I'm not too worried about the growing aspect that should be relatively easy outside of going to put in a couple 20 ft. poles. I have 2000 strawberry plants, 100 red Rasp. and 50 asparagus crowns ordered and on the way, that's going to take us a little longer to get in the ground.

I hope you have a good shovel!
I grow mine on a 6' trellis. No one told them they need 16'.

Re: Not another Hop growing Thread
No shovel for me, I haven't found one that fits my hand comfortably , Post hole digger on a tractor. I think I like the idea of some height for air flow around the vines. It looks like hops can be somewhat susceptible to Powdery Mildew and I'd like some good air around them.John Sand wrote:I hope you have a good shovel!

Edit: the poles won't be 20 ft. high but I want to put them in atleast 4' or 5' deep. We get some wind here on the hillside.

Re: Not another Hop growing Thread
It soinds like you will have quite the set up there. Add a few guns and you'll be ready for the zomibe apocalypse!
Seriously, that sounds like a great set up.
I think I could grow hops here pretty well but I don't want to chance my dog getting tovthem and I'm not inspired enough to really set things up to prevent that.
Plus, the whole drought thing...

Too many dogs - not just my own - but random fosters - is why I do not grow hops. The only reason why.
Re: Not another Hop growing Thread
Berry, I'm sure they grow best on a tall pole. That's why the commercial guys do it. I just don't have room on my little plot for such things.

Rhizomes and twine just arrived. I'm excited to grow some hops and use them in a homemade beer....

Re: Not another Hop growing Thread
Got them planted today, later then I wanted too but planted now. I decided to go with raised beds like I do with Strawberries , I have the equipment to make the raised beds anyways. I've never grown hops before and I'm excited, about the same thing as planting Raspberries and I have done a lot of them

Re: Not another Hop growing Thread
I planted 8 that looks too small in that area, but if they turn out good this summer I have room to expand. I put the same varieties 3 ft apart and 7 ft between the other varieties. Not going to worry about the tall poles this year but might get them in. I think a 6 ft poles on each should be high enough for the first year while they are getting established
