Galaxy Pale Ale

Post by BlackDuck »

Here is the recipe for the single hopped pale ale using Galaxy. I appreciate everyone's input in recommending Galaxy. My goal is to make what a local brewery calls a "super" pale ale. it's just a super hoppy pale ale but not quite an IPA. Basically, it's got the ABV, color, and bitterness of a pale ale, but it's hop aroma and flavor is up there with an IPA. Since Galaxy is a high alpha hop, I've decided to go with only one late addition at T-20 minutes for the flavor, then the rest in a steep, 4 day dry hop and 4 day keg hop for an awesome aroma. This should give me the hop flavor and aroma profile I'm looking at without a high perceived bitterness. Your thoughts and comments on the recipe are always welcome.

Looks like a uber enjoyable recipe. My only Galaxy was the Drop Kick Nate which had El Dorado with it and I'm not very sure what it was I liked so much about it but I'm sure Galaxy played a huge part (and I'm doing it again soon).
There are tons of beers I've had lately with Galaxy but with so many other hops, I'm not sure what stands out. Can't wait to hear what you get out of this one. With that simple grain bill and the 05 yeast, your hops should shine and your nose will likely love it!

Can't wait to hear about the results. Looks like a good, solid APA. 54 IBUs sounds like a sweet spot to me.

And I thought this simple recipe seemed familiar....it's basically what I use for my Nelson Sauvin Pale Ale. Minor differences are that I use a little wheat instead of Carapils and I use a touch of Magnum (clean bittering) at 60 before the late addition. But from there, it's a late addition + hop stand only.

Like mashani, I do like these simple, late addition beers. Things don't have to be complex to be really good.

I had to stop at my local bottle shop today to pick up a bomber of Stone Stachasticity Project that was being held for me. BUT, I also picked up a bomber from one of my favorite in state breweries; Rhinegeist. It's their second anniversary recipe called Deuce. And guess what the hops are....galaxy and citra. At least I'll get a little idea on what it might be like.

I stopped at the LHBS last night to get all the ingredients for this. I'm taking tomorrow off work and will brew it up. Instead of buying just plain ole Briess 2 Row, I bought Briess Pale Ale Malt. It's a couple degrees lovibond darker, but I thought I would give it a try. Everything else in the recipe stays the same.

Guess I shouldn't tell Ron that every beer I've sent him brewed with 2 Row was with Briess Pale Ale Malt, should I.

I actually mix and match those two. When I'm at MoreBeer picking up my grains I always forget which one I use and for some reason it's one of the things that I don't take notes on.
So, while I'm almost anal about other ingredients and things I find myself being sloppy on this base grain sometimes. Ssshhhhh.

I think taking a day off and brewing while others are working is awesome! I did this a few weeks ago and while brewing I chuckled a few times at all you other bozos who were working while I was brewing. Now you can do the same. And beers are better when brewed on a 'take off' day.

The Swaen malt I just got 10 lbs of is pale ale malt and is a few lovibond higher. My LHBS tried to get me to buy his last sack of pale ale malt but I'm not thinking I want 50 lbs of it when I have a sack of standard 2 row. But, there are many breweries who use this malt and you'll like it.

This isn't the first pour of this, but it's the first one I remembered to get a picture of and post about. But it's only about the 5th one I've had. It's really pretty good. It's very citrusy and fruity. It doesn't have a huge bitterness to it, but it's there, which is awesome for a pale ale. The aroma is good, not real strong. But the flavor is awesome. This turned out pretty good, I may just have to keep this one in the rotation.
