should I ditch the starter?

Post by losman26 »

I did a 1.8 L starter using the 3787 yeast, and had some serious blowoff issues. When I came home, the foam stopper came almost all the way out and was just resting on the lip of the flask. I'm not sure if I should keep this or throw it out.

Been there, done that, pitched that starter, made that beer, drank that beer, it was great. Hope that helps. :)

I agree with Inky...

If it were me, I'ld use it.

It's probably fine as if it was producing positive CO2 pressure, that minimizes the organisms that could have infected it....

But, even if it did get something in it, it could produce a great, albeit different beer than intended!

yeah, I'm doing a westy 12 clone, so that's why i'm unsure about what to do. Basically the foam stopper was still in there but kind of resting on the lip of the flask sideways with blowoff material everywherel

I'd also use it. All that krausen spewing out should have kicked out any bugs that fell on top. 3787 krausen is tough, the yeast gets stuck in it too which is one of the reasons why feeding it is a good thing.
