What type of Bag do you use?

Although you don't need a mash ton or other things to do BIAB, you still need the right sfuff to brew it right!

What type of Bag do you use?

Post by JohnSant »

Ok I've been using a Bags from my LHBS and I've used Paint Bags from hardware stores. I know that a lot of brewers use the Wilserbrewer Bags http://biabbags.webs.com/ just wondering what those that use them think.

I used paint bags for a couple years with my turkey pot. Once I upgraded to a 10 g pot, I (my wife) sewed me one out of toile. I picked it up from JoAnns for like $2 and followed the diagram at biabrewer.

I LOVE my Wilserbrewer bags. I have two different pot sizes and two different bags. Each bag has over 30 batches through them and are holding up well. I do straight BIAB and don't recirculate like your new system does, but I have read where others have used them that way with no problem.

I also use the Wilserbrewer bags. They last me 3 years or more.

Do you get a lot of grain kernells through the bag or dose it hold most of it in?

Wilserbrewer http://biabbags.webs.com/ for me, too. Only had it about a year, and only used about 6-8 times, but it seems like it should last a good long time. And he customizes to your kettle dimensions. No kernels get through, at all. Recommended.

I've been using paint strainer bags from my hardware store. IIRC they are $5.00 for 3 bags and they last multiple batches each.

I also use paint store bags. They pass some flour, (I grind in a blender) and I have to watch for strain. I've read good things about Wilser Bags. He has sales sometimes.

Great stuff here guys!! Anyone use the hops bag they have at Wilsbrewer? I use paint strainer bags for my hops with my hop spider but they don't sit as low as I would like them to. Any reviews for that?

I very rarely use hop bags as I feel they reduce the effects but I've read his hop bags are good quality.

I do not use hop bags for any of my hop additions. They all go commando, even the dry hops.

It may be my new brew tinker project. Right now my boil kettle has a false bottom hooked up to the spigot because of a process I used to use and just haven't modified. I need to fix the tubing on it to drain more from the side and I can just whirlpool. My biggest concern is my pump and plate chiller. I use the bag and the false bottom to prevent chunks from getting in the chiller. I haven't noticed any difference with using the hop spider and sack. Makes my clean up really easy.

These 2 ounce and 4 ounce nylon mesh hop sacks have been used and reused a lot over the past four years and they're still as good as new. They were ordered from Midwest Supply to replace the muslin sacks that were used previously.

I started this thread so I guess I'll let you all know what I've done, I still have the paint strainer and LHBS bags, however I did order a set of bags from Wilserbrewer and got them in last Saturday. After looking at the mesh it seems that the Wilserbrewer bags have a much finer mesh than the others I have so I am looking forward to using these with the next brew day, I'll post after the brew is completed with the results, thanks for all the input. :) :flag:

I use the paint strainer bags from home depot and they seem to last awhile. I use muslin sacks on my hop spider and when just doing a steep and toss them when done. Good post JohnSant, I think a Wilserbrewer Bag should be one of the next things I purchase.
