My Son Smokes!

Post by John Sand »

I have three sons and a daughter, I acquired them all through two marriages. My youngest son is not the most talkative, or outwardly sentimental. We've talked about sports, girls, occasionally firmly about grades or parties. I feel we have a good relationship, but we've found new common ground. He bought a Char-Griller Akorn Smoker/Grill, the same as mine. He already had been smoking on another type, and he has been growing as a cook for several years. He works as a butcher, and cooks on the side as well. On Easter he came over and roasted half the prime rib, smoking half. Tonight he came over and borrowed my pizza stone, giving us samples of his smoked stuffed meatloaf. (Excellent)
It may seem like a small thing, but I am so thrilled to do this with him. I didn't know him when he learned to throw and catch, or ride a bike. It warms my heart to share this pastime with him now.

That's great, John.
"Filled with mingled cream and amber
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain
-- Quaintest thoughts -- Queerest fancies
Come to life and fade away;
Who cares how time advances?
I am drinking ale today."

That's very gratifying, John. I'm happy for you.

My hobbies (brewing and barbecuing) don't really include my family all that much, oddly. Neither my wife nor my son drink, so my beer is solely my own (although my daughter and her husband enjoy beer from time to time, but they don't live here).

While my wife really loves my homemade barbecue sauce, she uses it more as a substitute for ketchup. She just doesn't get into my barbecue specialty, which is baby back ribs.

I'd love to teach my son how to cook, but he's simply not interested, and he's less interested in barbecued ribs than my wife. In his defense, he's a pretty picker eater, and doesn't like highly seasoned foods. Again, my daughter and son-in-law are more likely to be receptive to this, but they're not going to come up from Brooklyn just to eat ribs and drink homebrew. :(

It really is. I just realized the down side though. He borrowed my pizza stone the other day. I saw a picture of the finished pizza, but the stone hasn't come back! :)

Okay, the stone came home today, with some outstanding pulled pork tacos, home-made slaw, and a very nice note. That boy can cook!
